@allie912 I would agree, this is usually true, but this tree has been like this for the past several years, so it doesn't appear as though it has harmed it, though its growth may have been stunned.
We have a vine here in Australia that does this to trees called the Strangler Fig. It takes over a tree, strangling the life out of it until it dies, then what is left is the hollow of it where the fig has established itself... I remember seeing a lot of them in Vanuatu while I was there too.
Cool find, Rick. The shape of the tree is very interesting visually. We have invasive vines like that all over the Cape. My husband wrestles with some in our backyard every year.
