I am not sure what kind of bird this is, but as I was out for my lunch time drive, I spotted this guy hopping around in the snow so I quick grabbed my camera and caught one shot of him. Not real clear, but perhaps one of my Eastern friends can help me identify this bird. It looks like it could be some type of woodpecker?
I agree with Paul- it's a Kildeer. Your area is a perfect habitat for them. Their call sounds like their name "kil-deer, kil-deer, kil-deer". Good shot!
Killdeers are known for a clever trick. They pretend to be injured and hop as if they can't fly to draw predators away from their nest then they fly away as the predator gets close to them. It seems a little early in the season for that behavior though.
