Can anyone tell me which one would be the better one for a novice photographer interested in DSLR cameras? I saw similar cameras on www.digital-photography-school.com top 20 DSLR models, but I don't recall actually seeing those two. I don't have tons of extra cash to spend, so I have to go with the lower end models, but don't want to spend that much on something crummy.
For now, I'm working with a P&S and hopefully I'll get way better before I actually get a new camera.
Haha I've heard that before. I think the Sony was cheaper, which was why I was wondering if it was a good one or not. I'm hoping to maybe get a DSLR camera for Christmas *shhh I haven't told my husband that's what I want yet!* :p
Well I know Canon is King of 365, but I have a Sony a230- and it has been relatively good to me. As a photog new to DSLR cameras I really appreciate the on screen guides on my camera which have made learning new things easier. The camera is fairly light weight and easy to handle, but definately doesn't have the lens quality of the higher end cameras. I'm sure that as I get more comfortable using all the features that an this type of camera has to offer I will want a Canon, but for now I am satisfied. If budget is the main factor in choosing what type of camera you get, Sony is definately cheaper, but if you can shoot a little higher I'd say go for the Canon right from the start. Hope that helps, and good luck with your new purchase.
I had exactly the same dillema a few months ago. And I chose Canon. The camera body costs a bit more, but usually, the accessories (lense, flash, etc) are cheaper with Cannon. Plus, with Cannon, you can buy accessories from other brands (ex: Sigma). But I think that if you buy Sony, you're "stuck with" Sony accessories.
I have a rebel XS and I'm very happy with it. Especially if your P&S is a Cannon, the transition is easier, cause the symbols are the same.
Canon or Nikon. I wouldn't recommend going with anything else. I could be wrong, but I believe there are more possibilities with lenses for Canon or Nikon. It can grow more with you, in addition to being just plain good quality.
Hmmm I asked a couple of my friends who have DSLRs what they have, and a bunch of them recommended Nikon even though that wasn't one of the options haha. I have a while before I have to decide; I want to get better just using my p&s first. I think Sony's officially out of the running now. Just Canon or Nikon, I guess. Thanks, everyone!
You can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I think the biggest issue is that you are buying a system - not just a camera. You'll buy lenses, and then another body for those lenses, and then more lenses, and speedlights, and pocketwizards and.....
The more you buy, the harder it is to switch brands. And for accessories and range of lenses (genuine and other brands) and suchlike, Canon and Nikon have everything beat right now. Sony might catch up in a few years - they have the budget to make a huge dent in the Canon-Nikon lead, but right now they just aren't in the running.
