I thought this may be of some interest if you are considering the wedding route

This is exactly why I wouldn't go in this direction. Portraits too. Good read. Sound advice.

Frightening. I am never going to do another wedding either.

Amen! I could never do a wedding without ending up in an asylum. Not that I'm that good anyway. Bah ha ha ha ha ha!!!!! ;)

Hahaha!!!! I'm with him. After briefly, very briefly, thinking about what I would do with my photos and what I would do with photography in general, I pondered the idea of trying to do it to make money. I've done some volunteer photography with local groups and quickly learned that working for someone means taking the photos they want. I always try to put my own spin on things but that little voice keeps reminding me that these photos are for other people.

I think most people really don't understand the work involved with photography. They seem to think it costs nothing to bang out lots of awesome photos that are ready for distribution or publication. A simple thank you and some credit is all I've ever gotten. I would love to get paid money or even something in trade but it appears to be a thankless job.

Whether we get paid or not, taking photos for other people is very different than taking photos just for ourselves. That puts a lot of pressure on the photographer to always consider the client. It is that reason I personally don't pursue this path.

I am the official photographer for work parties - mostly baby showers and the like. I do pretty well with that if I must say so, actually my coworkers agree or maybe they're just being nice and secretly taking their own pictures with a cell phone. A few times someone has asked if I have ever done weddings. Oh hell no, I've seen the wrong shade of flower send a seemingly normal person into a fit of hysterica. Not a chance I'm going anywhere near that.

I've shot two weddings… one was for a coworker whose photographer had an emergency and had to cancel on her last minute. I was at the wedding with my camera and her mom came over and begged me to help. The second was for my best friend who flew me to Puerto Rico in exchange for shooting her wedding while I was there. I otherwise would not have been unable to go. After that I vowed to NEVER do another wedding again… TOOOOOO stressful! I also don't do newborns!
