I've used a plastic carrier bag as a light diffuser before. It works quite well too but you look a bit daft with an inflated Tesco carrier bag in top of an upturned flash!
Very good information. I've read even a sheet of white paper helps diffuse the light..
using colored gels like blue or orange over the flash also leads to some cool effects.
