Hi all,

I'm no pro but I'd hate to see my photography used with out permission - is it best to put a watermark on?

Cheers

I have recently began watermarking all my photographs, and even going back and watermarking old ones, because there seems to be a lot of stealing going on latetly and like you said I would never want to see my photo's used without my permission.

i've always pretty much been against watermarking, except for pros, but i am starting it myself as of today, and like sabrina said, some people will try and pass off other people's photo as their own. as i still don't like the looks of larger ones, i've decided on something small and discreet but its still there :)

jinx put on a great tutorial today of how to do this in Photoshop or PS Elements if you use either ... here's the link .... http://365project.org/discuss/tips-n-tricks/2798/create-a-custom-brush-for-watermarks

hope this helps :)

Lightroom 3 lets you add watermarks when you export your photos. I have started watermarking all my photos as they go far and wide. People still take them all the time. I must have dozens of photos used as profile pics and they rarely ever ask. I'm a band photographer, so shoot a lot of people. Most people crop the watermark off. I tried putting it in the middle of the photo, but it really spoils it.

Always do. I've seen a lot of plagarism and it's irritating to see a photo of yours used by others without your permission and even claiming it as their own. Usually I make sure if the shot is of landscapes and so, leave your mark.

I put a lot of photographs up on Face book and use a very big watermark there but here I just use my little signature down the bottom. I learned that if people are going to steal your images a lot of them have the savvy to know how to remove the watermarks. I have one up with my big water mark but I really don't like what it does to the image.. however it does protect them a little more

As some people may have noticed, allmost two days ago one of my photos was stolen and shamefully used in another person`s album. On this website.I was shocked, and still am.I shouldn`t be,but I am,it never happened to me before.

...that being said,I will NEVER put watermarks on my photos.I`m not that AFFRAID,and ,unless I put the watermark right in the middle of the photo, there`s ALLWAYS a way to crop or edit the watermak out!

And in my oppinion,a watermark really degrades the quality of a photo, and there`s maybe 1% of the people on this website, who put watermarks on,and I like. Oh,wait, there`s just one person! ....

If I eventually decide to put a watermark on my shots,it will definately NOT be because of the potential thiefs. What, should I degrade my photos because I`m chicken?! .... If the lame desperate scum wants to take `em,then do it,but they better do it the right way,so I never find out! And even so,the quality of the stolen shot is nowhere near to the quality of the original, wich has EXIF info and s*beep*hit.

So,NO,I shall never tremble and be affraid of the evil lurking out there.Screw `em !

Just like Tadii above, I've always been more or less against watermarking. However, I'm going to start watermarking my photographs soon. As said above, Lightroom 3 makes it easy when you're exporting the photos, but adding the watermark isn't too tough of a chore in any other editing programs either.

Alas, the Internet makes plagiarism easy, but I'm not too afraid of it. After all, I want to show my pictures to other people and I also want to see what kind of photographs others have taken.

I hate seeing an enormous watermark against a photograph. It completely takes your eyes away from what the photographer/artist intended. I would think that when most people go out shooting, they aren't thinking in the back of their minds... "I had better frame the subject like THIS because I'm going to put the watermark HERE."

As previously mentioned, people are more than saavy enough to figure out a way to hide and/or eliminate your watermark. If they want to crop the photo, they will. I don't do this for a living so I can't see anyone profiting from any of my photos, especially since I don't. =)

I love my camera and I love photography and I do it as a hobby and as a means of continued learning. I've no desire whatsoever in having a large "SCOTT WONG PHOTOGRAPHY" typeset against a photograph that I feel like I worked hard on...

my two pennies.

Thanks all - I think even a little watermark is better than nothing - it will put some off and those that it doesn't well bad karma to them!

I'm a graphic designer so I know how to photoshop indescretions away - but I wouldn't on a watermarked photos :-)
