A different kind of 365 project...

December 15th, 2011
This chap is doing an interesting 365-type project. He is shooting with one camera, one film, and one lens for an entire year. Now, the camera is a Leica M6, so I don't feel too bad for him - I think if someone forced one of those on me for a year I could take it. ;) But the pictures he has so far are absolutely brills (his Holga shots are amazing too).

Thought that some of my comrades-in-arms when it comes to film would like this. :) Don't have to shoot on film to love the pics though - his street shots are wow:

Good link, his street stuff makes me think I'm being a bit pussy with mine and I need to get more in peoples faces.

@jasehoad I know, right? I'm such a f***ing chicken about all that. All of my street shots are of the actual street. :)

wait, are you advertising a different 365 project site? :P

this is very cool. I don't know that I would have the patience to do it, though. maybe we can do a week of analog sometime in the next year as a "theme" :) i love how his photos all look old - the grain is superb.

@sdpace I think I love you. ;)

Yeah - I have way too many cameras and I like and use them all for different things. If I had to stick to one my brains would probably pop. (Although I'd give it a try for a Leica M6...)

I would definitely be down for a week of analog! Name the place and time. :) Speaking of analog, I just put a bunch of Holga shots on my Flickr. Whoever scanned them at the lab didn't do a bang-up job, but the shots I love.

Speaking of Holgas - the shots he gets from his, like, WHOA.

@beautifulthing I only have the capability to make digital holga with Lightroom presets. I like to play with them and see what I come up with. .........going to check your Flickr!

@beautifulthing oh geez...i didn't know you could get a Holga for so cheap! Hey, Santa.... :) Your shots are great - I like the one of the corner/walls best.

@sdpace Thanks!! Yeah, Holgas are actually pretty cheap! The most expensive one I have was $65 - and at the time you couldn't buy them in the States so I had to order from Korea or somewhere. It's a 35mm TLR. The other is my medium format Holga, and I got that in a whole kit with a book and accessories for only $50. A plain Jane 35mm Holga is anywhere from $20-30, depending on where you go!

I think I liked the corner walls one best too - I was really excited in that every shot on this roll turned out great. Well, IMHO, at any rate. :)

I got my Holga with built in flash for $40 from B&H. Mine is crazy good, though... hardly any light leaks, pretty sharp lens. My iPhone can take far crappier lomo photos than my Holga will ever be able to muster.

@beautifulthing Who do you get to do your scanning? I send all my film to Dwayne's Photo, but am sooooooooooo disappointed in their scan quality. I finally bought a lightbox, and just photograph all my slide and b&w negatives with my DSLR instead of scanning. Color I still get scanned, but usually have to run it through photoshop and adjust levels to get the colors anywhere as nice as the actual film. I really need to just pony up and buy a decent scanner that can do 120...

@hmgphotos I go to a local shop here in Denver, Mike's Camera. They normally do a pretty good job, but these shots actually came back really fast, which leads me to think the holiday crunch is making them hurry jobs they wouldn't normally hurry. The Holga can offset things a tad, depending on how the nimrod using the camera (hi, me) is advancing the film - you can't just auto-scan them, you have to look at each frame, and I'm sure they don't have time to do that right now.

I'm lucky in that my 120 Holga is really good too - no light leaks to speak of, etc. The quality of these photos was great, actually better than what I just got back from my Rollei, although that could have been operator error and ded from flooness. :)

My next camera investment is going to be a scanner that does both 120 and 35mm, so that I can do my own scanning. Maybe Uncle Sam will help me out with that around tax time. :) I'm having a hard time finding one that does both and isn't hella expensive, but I'm sure they're out there.

@beautifulthing I have an old Dimage Scan Dual IV for 35mm. Bit old, takes some attention to get it to work with newer operating systems, but still does decent scans.

And ah yes, Mike's Camera. They once got mad at me for pointing out that B&H sold the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 for $300 cheaper, LOL. I really like Denver Pro Photo, especially when they have cheap expired film.

@hmgphotos Yeah, try going in there and telling them how much something is on Amazon, too. ;) Their prices on gear and such - yikes. I'm all about supporting local business, but there's only SO far I'm willing to take it. :) But I like 'em alright. I don't know this Denver Pro Photo place though. This knowledge may prove to be dangerous in my hands.

Did you ever know about The Denver Darkroom? The guy that ran the place shut it down like a month or so before I started getting serious about film. Maybe the same month. FAIL.

@beautifulthing Ooooh, Denver Pro Photo is awesome!!! http://www.denverprophoto.com Not awesome if you shoot Canon (they don't carry Canon stuff)l, but awesome for Nikon and film buffs! They also have a in-house lab. They do events and stuff, too. Last time I went I got lots of expired 120, and also some Redbird film and other stuff. I've had to buy batteries for my DSLRs on a pinch there, and their prices were identical to B&H's, so they gained my utmost love!

@hmgphotos Oh god. I shoot Nikon.

On the website now.

Oh. GOD.
