Any idea what happened in this photo?

January 15th, 2012
I took this at sunset today. In amongst some good shots, this one turns up looking like Martians have landed - the green area halfway up the hillside. Any ideas what it is? Using a Nikon D5000 with the standard Nikkor 18-55.

PS first attempt at inserting a Flickr link so apologies if it doesn't work...

I'm sorry I don't know why the link doesn't work. Copy and paste does though if you can be bothered... Thanks in advance if you can.

are you using a UV filter on your photos? it can be caused by dust or water on the filter or sometimes just by the filter itself, if this is the case next time try cleaning the filter or just take it off .
January 15th, 2012
Oh that is strange.
January 15th, 2012
@asrai yes I use a UV filter and I tend to leave my polarising filter on. I'll clean them both. Weird looking effect though huh?

Shooting into the sun, I would guess it's flare of some kind.
January 15th, 2012
You need to put the thing you want to link to, the flickr URL, inbetween the double quotes in the href="here" part :)
January 15th, 2012
@eyebrows I did. But it came up in the reply as a blue square with a white question mark in it so I deleted it.
January 15th, 2012
That'd be if you also put it in an part; putting it in the CLICKABLE TEXT HERE will be fine
January 15th, 2012
@eyebrows I thought that's what I'd done in the beginning. Let's try again. (sorry everyone)

my guess, after looking at it in a larger size, is that it's the reflection of clouds in the sky. There might have been a smudge on your lens that you didn't know about which caught it?

I have no idea. But it doesn't look like it's on the ground in the bigger sizes. I do think it's neat though!
January 15th, 2012
no idea, but i think it's awesome.
January 15th, 2012
You're just putting the word "URL" in there - you need to put *the actual URL you want to link to* in there :)
January 15th, 2012
My guess would be because of the sun reflecting on the lens? HAHA just hypothesizing :D
January 15th, 2012
My guess is the sun is slightly breaking through and lighting up the green grass,
that is if there is any green grass. Or maybe it is a field of Kriptonite :) superman better stay away
January 15th, 2012
@rrt but the suns rays are no longer able to reach that location

From the rings and slight curvature of the light, it looks like a lens reflection. Especially with strong light sources (sun) coming in to your lens, some light may start getting bounced around a bit weird because of all the different glass elements. You can get lens flare from that, but also strange light effects like these where a reflections bounces away weird and gives a strange colored spot on your photo. Personally, I think it looks pretty :-)

@meshinka yes as I look again tis true.
January 15th, 2012
That photo is pretty awesome and mysterious looking. I think that it must be some sort of sun flare.

Mel
i think you need to send it to one of those alien followers groups, or the news, either or it looks cool
January 15th, 2012
@joannapayne As someone else mentioned, it is from the UV filter. If it isn't a multi-coated filter, this can happen. I have some Tiffen and other cheap UV filters and they do this with bright light sources in frame, and always green for me. Take off the filter to remove it, or I've read that higher end UV filters don't have it. Like $30 and higher filters.

@eyebrows I did put the actual URL in there: the first time I copied and pasted from the 'share' window in Flickr and the second time I copied and pasted the URL from my browser.
@sheg @leahfu @sdpace @rrt @raymond @5unflow3r Thanks for the comments. I've looked back at some of the other shots I deleted before I noticed it and will upload the others to my Flickr site shortly. They show the martians landing on different bits of the mountain. There's an island just off this coast that is weird - sometimes it looks near, sometimes far, sometimes big sometimes tiny and it often seems to be in a different place from normal. All the locals laugh about it but now I think the Martians must be using it as a base. LOL
@mallocarray Thanks for advice. I'll think about upgrading when I have some dosh.

be warned - lots of cookies with this link, my Norton turned itself to AT RISK

@joannapayne I just keep in mind that if there is bright light sources, such as exposed light bulbs or the sun, and if I care enough about the picture, then I take off the filter. Otherwise, I just know what I'm getting myself into.

I think it looks great Joanna. You arnt the only one with 'different' photos. I took some in the afternoon on 14 Jan 2012 that have blue circles/spots in the clouds. Its not dirt on the lens - the spots are in 3 different positions. Not a filter - I dont own one. Looks to me like the blue part of the spectrum of light from the sun is being reflected from ice crystals in one cloud onto another cloud. Sorry I have no idea what might have caused your green spots but here are some links I found last night that people might like, they have awesome weather photos: http://morfis.wordpress.com/category/science/ http://morfis.wordpress.com/2011/01/30/most-unusual-weather-phenomena/#more-5778

@mallocarray Thanks for the advice.
@suebarni Wow, that second link brings up some AMAZING things. As a Geography graduate (about a million years ago) I was particularly interested Seriously awesome, thanks.
