Yes, another critique request: candles

February 9th, 2012
As a Year Two-er, I am trying to push myself to do more with my photography and try new things. I have tagged several recent pictures with the 'critique-me' tag, but it hasn't seemed to generate any outside interest. So here's the shameless plug attempt.

This month I am focusing on lighting, and I posted two selfies I did using candles. I would be very interested in feedback about them, or any of my other pictures, as I really want to think about them in a more critical way (other than 'how much I dislike my nose...).

Thanks!

i like your nose.

and i really like that first pic.

the second one has a bit too much of an orange hue going on... think it takes away from the lighting a bit.

I agree with @grecican about all three! I think the hair down makes it a little more photogenic because it slightly isolates your face. In the second one, the tones are close so the face/neck starts to get lost in your sweater because of the lighting.

I think they are both just slightly overexposed. The flames are blown out and you've lost their character. I think it could be just a bit more underexposed to show the flames in more than just bright white. It'll make you a bit darker in places and light your face just enough. I think it would set a better mood.
Of the 2, I like the second one better as there is no shadow on the wall and I prefer the more golden glow in the second one.

I don't know anything about anything at all really, but I'd have to agree you have a lovely nose! I also noticed the shadow on the wall in the first pic...that is better in the 2nd pic to my eye. Also I think more contrast would be nice, I like the dark corner in the top pic and the overall composition of the top one much better. Perhaps if the whole back wall were dark the color in the foreground would stand out more? And again, I know nada about photography, but I know what I like!

Personally, I find the second shot warmer and more homey then the first, I agree that the candles would be better if not over-exposed and I think I see what you were attempting by looking down, I think looking at or near the camera and having the candles reflecting in your eyes would be better, especially if the exposure was turned down too

I'm doing a candle series right now so maybe check out those photos. The shots are basically SOOC other than maybe a little crop and then the addition of the quotes. Exposure, lighting, etc. are untouched. In some of the comments, there are some descriptions on my set up, etc. I don't have any sophisticated equipment. Just use what I have around the house.

Updated version of the first picture:

@grecican Thanks. My thoughts exactly. The second pic was from when I was experimenting with what white balance to use, and I didn't think the red/orange hue was very accurate compared to what I was actually seeing.

@shadesofgrey Thanks, that's really helpful. I actually took most of the pics with my hair back, but then realized going back over them that I liked the hair down much better. (Didn't want to light myself up!)

@mikehamm Thanks, Mike. What do you think of the newly posted version, compared to the first? This is the shorter shutter speed from the same shot (exposure bracketing).

@tamsg4 Ha ha, thanks for the compliment. Interesting thoughts about changing the wall too. Let me know if you have any additional thoughts with the darker, cropped version (above).

@mgirard Thanks, Michael. What do you think of the lower exposure? I did try several different angles and varieties of looking at the candle, but I couldn't find a way to reconcile that with trying to blow out the candles. Also, I found the reflections in my eyes a little creepy, but maybe that's just me.

@debsphotos Thanks, Debbie, that sounds really helpful! I'll definitely check them out.

@archaeofrog, better. That shadow on the wall just bothers me a bit, but I do like how your face comes out of the darkness. Do you have a darker one of the second pic?

@mikehamm Thanks. No, I don't have a darker one of the second as that when I was testing whitebalance and before I started bracketing my exposures ...
