oh ok, i'm not sure, i think you can, i've never tried. i dont tend to mess with my camera settings too much as i dint really get it. i'm going to start going to a camera club in september and they do workshops on setting etc so will be good for me to learn and i want to get a book on digital cameras, do you know of any good ones that will teach me the skills i need? @viranod
@kmrtn6 I haven't read books on cameras/photography for a while, but like to look through books with great photos.
For your camera, I believe it can manual focus, I googled your camera model and manual focus and there are several youtube videos demonstrating how to do it!
On top of the manual focus thinggy, you may want to use a wide aperture setting, say, f/2.8. It will also help if the background is quite a distance away i.e. you don't want to place the ball flush against a wall, for example. This will get you a nice blurry background when combined with a large aperture. Hope this helped.
I did a whole series of crystal ball shots in.. Have you seen that?

I do both - manual and auto focus. But mostly auto! I always try to focus on the object in the crystal ball. Works well for me ;-)
cheers all, i think the problem was it was so bright i couldn't see the autofocus box as i got a flare of sun i think or something , will try altering to f2.8 in future
