Low-Key?

August 6th, 2012
I attempted a low-key shot today and I'm not sure if I got it right. The shot is of a piece of petrified wood being side-lit. Any critiques or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance! Here is the shot:

I think it is right, but if u want to more light use the "curve" editing tool in your editing software. Enjoy!

At first I thought it was water running, but I love it. I think the lighting is great!

Well it is low-key... :)

No my cup of tea it is missing a subject. I like photos that tell a story or have a solid subject. - even more so when you dont have colour.

Before I start I claim to be no expert at this.
I think you got the idea of the angled light but i feel the wood dominates the shot. perhaps there is too much of it. For me, a great low key is where there is more dark than light. Maybe you can attempt the same shot but from a different angle. Here are a couple of examples of my low key, just to give you ideas

ANGEL STRUMMING IN LOW-KEY

This is my one and only attempt at low-key, it was for a challenge. I am not even sure if it is considered a true low-key?

@abhijit Thank you! I appreciate the feedback! I will try your suggestion. Your examples of low-key are gorgeous! I especially like the rock one with the reflection! Beautiful!

@shirljess Thank you for replying! I think it looks great! I think, as @abhijit said, the wood dominates the shot. I will have to try and leave more black void.
