As far as I know the Nikon D5000 has been replaced with the D5100. Both are very good entry level DSLR cameras. I recently bought the D5100 and am extremely happy with it. As Freida suggests google the camera and check it out!
Consumer Reports says yes, as Sally said, for an entry level dslr. I have read some great reviews. Upgrades have been made with the 5100 but the 5000 is still good.
Like @jsilver, all of my images are done with my D5000 you're welcome to browse my albums. I've found the only real limitation with it is that there is no focus motor in the body so the lens needs to have one, thus making the lenses that much more expensive.
I have a 5000 and I think it's pretty good. This is taken with one of the cheapest lenses, the 18-55.
If I didn't already have a DSLR and were looking to buy one I would look at the third generation ones without mirrors. Sony makes a great one, I forget what it's called. My dad has one and it's awesome. You get a 4/5 sensor instead of the 3/4 on Nikon's 3000, 5000, 5100, etc., so the image quality is generally better. It's smaller and lighter and excellent for street photography.
All my photos are done with the Nikon D5000, check them out. I have been very pleased with it.
Thank you for your helpful words! the one i want to buy is starting at 1 cent!
