Beach Shot Critique

May 22nd, 2013
Ok so as we move into (hopefully) summer, i'm going to try to get out and do some more natural light and beach shots. My last shoot was the only real beach shot i'd done without anyone there to help out... what are your thoughts?

What would you change? What am I missing?

Critique much appreciated as this will give me something to keep in my mind as I shoot next time

I like #3 because it has color in the background. The first two lack that contrast.

I like the slightly washed out look of the background in #1. It brings out the skin tones and has a nice beachy feel. And I like the use of the natural light very much in #3, but #2 feels a bit too gray and as John says lacks a bit of contrast. By the shadow in #3 it looks like you did have some sunshine, so maybe a reflector would have helped add a bit of glow to her face and body

I agree that three has contrast and is not washed out. Colors much more vibrant

I like #3 the most - it has the most depth, colours, contrast - feels the most complete to me.

I'd love to see #1 and #2 balanced out by some ocean blues, or something else to add a bit of pop. #2 in particular needs something in the background - the white is too stark against her outline. With #1, I also would have framed the shot a little differently - it looks a bit awkward cut off at the knees. I like how the sunlight is hitting her hair in #1, though :)

@chapjohn @jcarrollphoto @wadazomo @pocketmouse thanks for all your input guys, much appreciated. I actually agree with comments about #2 - I wish i'd had time to grab a reflector and set it up but Rebecca was freezing. In future i need to think about pre setup - getting everything ready for the shoot before the model gets ready so she stays nice and warm - either that or i shoot in a warm place.. OR I get a northern model cos those girls are hard core and can stand really cold temperatures without being phased lol

The difference in time between #1 and #3 was about 45 minutes I think and the sun had gone down considerably in that time... the glow that youre seeing is the sunset glow compared to the sun being quite high in 1 and 2.
