Should I have processed?

January 3rd, 2011
my second day here and first picture I really tried to get "perfect" haha. I'm very new to photography, having just bought my camera from a friend of mine.

Anyways, I took this while on a walk. Should I have processed it in any way? i haven't quite developed the eye for spotting minor changes that could be made yet, but would like to see others thoughts so I can apply them. Thank you. Also, comments are greatly appreciated :)

If that was my photo, I wouldn't have done a darned thing to it. It's beautiful.

it is gorgeous as is!

the depth of field and the composition are really well done the only thing i would have done would have been to raise the contrast a little bit. You have a good eye.

Thank you for the comments :) I am going to go back to the RAW file and play with the contrast, just to see the effects and to get a handle on it. Thank you again :)

More comments are always welcome of course!

@ohheythere I like it. If it were mine, I probably would have upped the contrast a little, and maybe the blacks as well, just to see how it changed things. I might also have turned up the clarity a little to see if that changed the look of the berries against the soft background; however, there's a good chance that having tried raising blacks and clarity, I would have shifted them right back down to their original levels and just went with the contrast change. I love Lightroom. :)

I have Lightroom in the works :) A friend of mine who sold me the camera suggested that program to me. Should have it next week or so!

Thank you very much for the honest critique.

I think its beautiful as is. I much prefer unedited photos.

I think it's interesting that people say they prefer unedited photos. I would argue that if the editing is done skillfully, you might not know the difference.

That was my major thought on the process. I am talking about editing to enhance the image for what it is, I don't want to have a final product that "looks" like it was edited.

I'm with you. I think editing is a great tool, but the finished product should still look like a photograph :)

I think this is completely up to what YOU like! I looked at your photo and think it's really great as is. On the other hand, I love processing my photographs. If you want, take a look at the last 8 pictures in my project. Can you tell which ones are edited and which ones aren't? I strive to make even my edited shots look unedited. Find whatever makes you happy and stick with it!

processing is an artistic choice but i love your photo just exactly the way it is - well done!

I'm leaving all my photos (except the first one, which I did before I decided this) unedited for the purpose of Project 365, just so I can have an even base to compare my pictures—for instance, I wouldn't be able to see if I've improved on getting the hang of exposure if all my pictures are edited to have the proper exposure. :)

i think it's gorgeous and lovely. i really love the pop of red, and the water droplets. i really have fun post processing, but i like this image as is. you can always play around and save different copies. :)

Editing or no editing is completely up to the individual. I posted before that I prefer unedited photos but now that I've read further posts let me rephrase that. I prefer photos that don't look like they are edited if that makes more sense.

I probably would have played with the contrast just a little, but not enough for it to look noticeably processed. That's a beautiful photo! I do edit sometimes, but either subtly or for it to look crazy-processed. Depends what mood I'm in haha.
