I don't usually do this, but could you take a look at one of my images and tell me what you think?

I like the shot overall, but i fell there is something missing or something is wrong with it..

I dunno... you know what they say, "you are your worst critic!"....

any and all comments and critiques would be greatly appreciated!!

Here ya go, just in case you wanted it to show up as a pic in the thread. (there's some html code in the bottom right if you scroll down that you can copy and paste and that makes the photo show up):

@bjboelke36 I really really dig this photo. I saw some other people saying maybe the crop? I can see that, yes, for sure. But then I go back on it and I think that those wonderful splashes wouldn't show if the crop were tighter and those I think make the photo just as much as the crown. I love the dark water and the contrast of the bright crown too, I think that's great. Maybe bump up the exposure or highlights slightly, and I do mean slightly, so that those beautiful reflections show up more. I think this shot is even cooler bigger by the way.

closer crop maybe? I like it center left to right but maybe take 20% off the bottom? IDK if you did any edit or not but it may help if you bump contrast, crank on vibrant, a slight unsharpen mask will make it really pop too. I know you don't like editing a ton but you got good bones here to work with. I think some edit will add what you feel is missing.

My opinion: I don't care for the lines coming from the splash. It doesn't feel right and maybe that is what you are seeing. If they are drops it would be easier for the mind to accept but lines .... not so much. I really like the deep blue color and the ripples on the water. Hope that helps.

see I like the lines... it implies motion without the primary drop being soft. It adds some excitement to me. I can see it going either way though but my personal taste loves them. I'm more into action photos though so take that for what its worth

thanks for the help everyone!

This is so stinking picky, but there is an ever-so-slight sense of the entire image sliding off to the lower left ... if it could be rotated just a very, very subtle even 1º clockwise ... I think it would vastly change the solidity of the shot and that subtle sense of it being 'off.' My humble opinion ...

And on my monitor, you've lost most of any color that might be revealed in the dark of the lower left, as well, so perhaps a little bump of the colors - not necessarily the brightness, however. Otherwise, I dig the shot, dig the crop, dig the ripples and depth of field ... well done!

@bjboelke36 @amyhughes I agree, the crop could be tighter, but the splashy lines would be gone. I had a few like this that looked like starbursts when I got my one and only good water shot awhile back...i like the look of the lines, so i wouldn't wanna crop them out either. the glare on the bottom right of the crown base is a little distracting because it's so bright, but otherwise, great job catching it!! :)

IF it were mine i would play with the colours..... Its colouring is a bit blandish. I have a new obsession with inverting colours ( i will post my water pic below which inverted ) AND i agree, DONT ditch the stripes, the give it a 'moving' feeling. Though to me as i said, the colours arent bold or accenting...... hope y advice helps, if not, ok. But I hope you find your fix so that u are finally satified with it.... PLEASE repost a pic if you chnage it any way so that we can see what you have done to change it! :) :) :)

Timing is good.

But there have been enough "water drop" shots on this site to bore a person to tears. So, if you want critique, mine is to be original and dig deep when wanting to shoot something.

It's not easy to do every day, and I get in ruts too. I think I've been in one for months.

I'm a big fan in general of water drops... I agree with Chris above but I still like the shots in general. I really really really am not a fan of the stripes. Personally I think that they're too straight. I agree that they can imply motion, but what motion are you trying to convey here? They look roughly the same width at the start and end so I cant imply motion inwards or outwards.

Either way, based on the length of them, I would have thought the motion would be faster than the resulting splash indicates. If they're supposed to be water coming outwards after impact, I think that shape wise its just not there either. For me, my attention was drawn here as opposed to ripples etc where I would have wanted my attention to be drawn.

I would have tried to concentrate on different lighting on it or potentially a way of getting more waves coming out of it?

I know you started with "I don't usually do this", but as someone new to photography, I wish there were more threads like this where somone would be brave enough to post a pic and let those of you whose opinions I feel I could learn from share your points of view and suggestions. I would actually love to see something like this be a weekly thing. I think we could all benefit from the ideas of our peers. So thank you for sharing your shot and being brave enough to ask for honest opinions. And thanks to those with enough knowledge and experience to reply with their comments.

i would(if i had the tools and the know how) crop a bit off the bottom rotate clockwise a little bit,as someone else said it isn't quite straight, and play with the contrast a bit to make it burst out a bit more.
well timed shot though, well done on catching the crown
