Advice on this watermark?

April 5th, 2011
Hey guys, I was just wondering if any of you could give me some advice on my watermark- any tips or tricks. I'm just starting to use one, and this is what I came up with.

I like it. What else are you looking for? I think it is small and clean and doesn't take away from your image.

Technically, there are three parts to any good watermark: the copyright symbol, the year the photo was taken, and your name. I don't use that, however, I simply use my business name.

It is clean and simple, but the problem is that this particular watermark is white on a black background. What happens if that portion of your composition is white?

The best way I have found to prevent the background from conflicting with the watermark is to use a partially transparent one. That way, the background determines your watermarks color and it works every time.

Yep, what they both said...I usually try to make my watermark a color found in the picture using the eye dropper tool...I think though that the transparent idea is a better overall one because I can't seem to make mine as dark as I want to sometimes.

i have my watermarks's opacity to 15%... i don't like people's eyes to go straight to how little or how small or what does my watermark say.. hihihihi it's just my preference hahaha =)) but yeah this watermark is clean.. good

When I developed my logo (knowing it would also be used as a watermark) I tried to find a balance between something that contributes to the style of the piece as a whole (and to my work as a whole), and something that is unobtrusive. I also tend to alter the opacity and positioning of my logo for each shot, although for 365 stuff I use Lightroom's watermark tool which is somewhat limiting in placement options (compared to using Photoshop).

Before deciding on a final design, perhaps try your watermark out on a stylistic range of your shots and see if it complements or detracts from them. Handwriting style watermarks work well for some genres but not others, so depending on the styles you shoot it may work for some images but not others.
