121 pictures into my project...open to suggestions...

May 6th, 2011
Hi All,

I have been having a BLAST at this project...when I first started in January all I could do with my Nikon D80 was turn it on and hope something comes out! This is both my personal journal of the things in my life and also a photo learning lesson. I'd like to chart my course and see what I have learned in this year. So now I am 5 months into this project and I'm looking for some honest feedback and some challange. Just so you know, I haven't had any lesson...just what I have learned on my own and I don't have editing software except for picnic.

If you have the time and ability, I would so appreciate your feedback.

thank you for considering this...

You and I started on the same day. I did not know that until today. I thought that this might be your second year. I started following you because I thought I would learn something about composition from you! I enjoy your photos. I looked over your shots from the very beginning. I noticed quite an improvement from your January & February shots and your March & April shots. I think you might be working on getting closer to your subjects, trying out different angles and getting good depth of field. Whatever you are doing, keep on doing it. Your shots are wonderful. If you wish, I will try to find the article that helped me the most.

I am so happy to share the journey of this project with you and find your work very inspiring -- including one of my favorite favs ever! This one:

You are so insightful in your captions -- and fun and truly thoughtful in your comments, as well. It's funny how people can feel like friends just through these limited interactions, but it's true!

As far as suggestions, I think the world of Photoshop editing would open up a new artistic journey for you (although I would never know you didn't edit except from your comment above)! If you're not shooting in manual mode and choosing your focus points, a good one-day workshop can get you there and the control is so liberating. But again, I'd never know from your work if you're not doing those things -- and I love the diversity, fun and thoughtfulness of all you do.

@luckygirl

Since I am not an expert there is nothing in your photos that I can find to critique. They are beautifully done - creatively composed and focused. Your titles are commentary are beautiful. I think your project is wonderful and I'm now a follower as I want to see more. :)

There is a new discussion link today. I thought of you when I saw it. I am going to use the techniques in this article to self critique my own photos. In case you are interested, here is the link: http://www.photosig.com/go/main/help?name=faq/faq.011

@minxymissk @stkimage @laceyjogautreau -thank you for stopping by and taking the time to look thru my photo's. I really appreciate it!! Your words have been very complimentary and that's awesome!
@mamabec- you KNOW I want to!! I gotta get better at portrait work but I'm trying!!
@busymum - THANK YOU! I am enjoying your work too!! We can grow together! Any thoughts or tips & tricks you have are gladly welcomed!
@daisy - We did?! That's awesome!! What a beautiful compliment, thank you very much! I would love to ready anything that you have found helpful! :-) You are correct, I am working on shooting more variety of subject, playing with lighting, and DOF...I wish I could say that I work hard on composition but honestly, I don't. I just shoot what I like to see?? Sometimes it works & other times...not so much! HA! Perhaps that's why I am looking for a measuring stick from outside sources to either confirm my choices or help me see things differently.

@samanthamcbride -ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, me too! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your work (FYI anyone out there who hasn't seen it already SHOULD!) What a huge compliment...thank you! I am usually in "p" mode but I have ventured out into Manual mode...I don't always trust my instincts on my ap & f. settings! If I go out & shoot everyday stuff...then I'll play with it but if I know a shot HAS to work...then I go back to P. The sad thing, I have Photoshop but havn't had anytime to learn it. I think learning it & taking a one-day would help...hmmm...gotta work on that. Stay tuned!
