I took this last night, and the focus is not good. I placed a meat themometer where the drop was falling and focused with auto focus. I then switched to manual focus but it still isn't clear. Also, do these shots work better if you are using a macro lens? I don't have one but do have some macro filters. I was just concerned that using them would make focusing more difficult. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Nice picture! I to recently tried this. here the red background is a bit of overkill. try more subtle background and also increasing the amount of water. Also different white balance settings like tungsten etc for nice color!
But this is actually really good the way it is!
When you try this again, if you can bounce the flash off of a white piece of paper or the ceiling, or diffuse it somehow, just so you don't get the shadow. Also if you can get more level with the splash it would give it a better feel. I know that people in the past have talked about using a flat cookie sheet with wrapping paper as a background. I have not tried that yet, but they had great results. I think the focus is spot on but if you aren't happy with it and your editing program has some sort of sharpen filter, you could try that to get the details a little more crisp. I think the background color is fine if you can get more level with the drop so the color doesn't come to the forefront as much. You could try experimenting with more or less water to get different results also.
Good first attempt! I just tried this (see today and tomorrows pics for my first attempts!) but chose to have my drops falling into a deep layer of water in a bucket. The drops were from a plastic bag of water suspended from the ceiling about 20cm above the bucket. White reflector behind to bounce a flash off. Fixed focus using a pencil holding it where the drop fell. Used a 50mm fixed lens. It got some little splashes on it as I was quite close to the splash zone.
@picturelover101 Thank you! @harsha I'm not sure how to adjust the white balance. Is that post processing? @shadesofgrey Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions. I will definitely be trying again soon. @billiusbog Thank you. I will go check out your photos.

Here are two great discussions on technique and the results!
