I tried my first selfie yesterday after seeing some AMAZING ones on this site. While I am not unhappy with how it came out, any tips and/or critiques are welcome to help me get better.
it is a nice image Ii love the tones very warm, if there is one thing though I would say the shadow in the bottom right is a bit of a distraction that takes away from the image
I love your eyelashes - absolutely beautiful eyes you have. Wanna see another profile-esque shot like this :) personally, though not a fan of them myself, I think this would've been really nice in monochrome.
@asrai@dmortega Agreed on the shadow on the bottom right. I'll have to play with that to see if I can get rid of it or lighten it a little. The one on the left is also a shadow that I can work with. Thank you both so much for your comments!
@indiannie_jones Thank you so much for your feedback. I'll have to try it in monochrome to see how that looks. Didn't think of that!
Exposure: 0.0063 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO Speed: 3200
You seem to have lots of room w/ the lighting you had in this shot to decrease your ISO a little. This would have helped you w/ clarity. I am guessing you exposed this in a priority or automatic mode? Dont be afraid to try and use Manual if you arent, its not as scary as it seems!
That said, this also feels overexposed (ie. blown out highlight on your face)
I agree w/ Annie, i think Monochrome would have been better (but then im also not a fan of sepia anyway) so thats more of an opinion.
The shadow is def distracting. Try play w/ some lights you have available or take shots near a window for better results imo.
All that said, your look is interesting. Your eyes certainly tell a story, so well done on that aspect! Composition is great too (not easy to get right when doing a selfie sometimes!)
@3nder Thank you so much for your comments! I did shoot this on manual focus mode but went with the automatic ISO setting so I definately can play with the next time.
The shot actually is in monochrome but I added a layer of bokah (from twinkle lights) to add some additional light. I MAY have gotten caught up in wanting to include bokah since I haven't used it before that I lost my objectivity. I agree with both you are Annie that the b&w might be more dramatic.
I will have to go back and try to edit out/lighten the shadow. I think that was just bad framing and lighting on my part. My bathroom does not have the most optimal lighting conditions :)
Thank you again for taking time to make suggestions! I will abolutely try these.
@mcdougall No problem!
Auto ISO somewhat cancels out Manual settings, it will try to adjust based on the built in light meter which is... not always so great.
Hahaha, yea bathrooms dont really offer the best of shooting conditions ;p
Hey, i can sympathize w/ that new things are fun, and easy to get carried away with ;]
I agree with the others. I really, really beautiful selfie. Love your expression, love your eyes but I also agree about the shadow. Maybe you can edit it out with the clone tool in Photoshop?
I am not very good at the whole critique thing. I think this is a lovely picture the only thing that I could say I would change would be the shadows on both sides...they distract you from the overall pic:)
Yup, that shadow on the right is distracting, but the shadow on the left gives your profile definition. Without it, there'd be no outline. I like the overexposed blown-out look. And you are stunningly beautiful.
@keke1rosie Thanks so much for taking time to look and comment! I'm going to have to work on the shadow thing - still working on my Photoshop skills so this will be a goo challenge :)
@dianed Thanks Diane! I'm thinking maybe if I can get rid of the shadow on the right and make the whole left side black that I could achieve the defintion without detracting from the imge. And thanks for the lovely compliment! It is amazing what can be achieved in editing :)
