First Critique - My HDR Photos

October 24th, 2011
I've recently been doing a fair bit of HDR processing on my photos.

Was hoping to get some feedback on a few of my HDR photos - you will see that there are three all different in appearance-
1. Bungles – slight glow, rich in colour, and slight increase in detail, no border.

2. Storm clouds rolling in – extreme detail, under exposed, slight saturation and vibrancy, with a border.

3. Subaru – extreme increase in gamma, and extreme detail, rich colour

Is there anything that I should consider with HDR processing?
And also to border or not to border that is the question?
Any feedback would be great though!

I like the first two as the HDR brings out all the detail in the shadows and highlights, however the car looks too over the top, it is personal opinion but I don't like it as it doesn't look real.

@luke Thanks for the feedback, I would have to agree with you. But its surprising how many photos in the 365 project world that actually look like the 3rd photo - Subaru. I guess its just personal preference really.

I love how natural the first one looks, the second one has an amazing dramatic sky and is my favourite, even though you could have brought out more detail in the lower section of the photo and I'm not a big fan of the border. I agree with you, I've seen many over-the-top HDRs like your third one but I rarely like them. It's a question of taste though :).

I think they get progressively worse, the first is nice, the second so-so and third doesn't appeal to me at all as it looks too garish. They key with HDR is to enhance your photos, not to make it look so unreal that it's a turn-off.

@jannaellen @vikdaddy personally I dont really like the effect of the 3rd photo either but just put it in as a contrasting HDR technique. Thanks guys for the constructive comments!

First : very nice picture, I would try to keep the halo in check though
Second : The bottom of the pic is ok, but I don't like how the sky turned out. Looks like the brightest parts have turned into grayish color after processing. Not a fan of borders in general, and would remove them from this one too.
Third : Way too over-processed to my liking.

First is good, very good. The whole idea of HDRs is really to deal with those extreme lighting situations...having said that...I love to sometimes go totally over the top too.

@janmaki yeah thanks for the halo tip!

I plove the first one - agree with checking the Halo - might want to reduce either the strength or the contrast to help this. but loving the vibrant blues. I'm a big user of HDR - most of what I do is a knocked back painterly - when halos or excessive bright spots appear i tend to pull the settings back to be less intense. good for you trying out different styles. No right or wrongs, all about personal taste at the end of the day

The only thing letting #1 down is the halo around the horizon as Jani @janmaki mentions, other than that it's close to perfect on the foreground elements and the range. Beautiful shot :) The 2nd one suffers from a bit of excessive clipping on the sky which really could have popped with a bit gentler touch - perhaps a little less on the smoothing and you'd have kept the detail on the subject bird's head as well. The last one is a shocker in colour but I reckon you make that B&W and you'll be suitably rewarded.

Love the first one.
