I think a good choice would be Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. From my memory, he goes over:
- the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
- when to favor a large or small aperture
- when to favor a fast or slow shutter speed
- rules for determining the correct exposure in situations that would fool your meter
The camera manual is the best place to start, once you learn the different between ISO, shutter, aperture and reading the meter, everything else will follow. Knowing your camera is more important than knowing what someone else does in xyz situation, which is what a book will 'teach' you.
@lisjam1 I used the exact same book when I bought my first DSLR. "I learned from this book and still refer to it often. Exposure Photo Workshop by Jeff Wignall. http://tinyurl.com/73544a3"
I'm currently learning from "Digital Photography Exposure For Dummies." I checked it out from the library & found it helpful enough that I purchased the book-- now if only the mail would bring it today, that would be good.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit.
I've read other books by Bryan Peterson that were great, too.
@prettyschmidtty You are using the same camera I started with, Rebel XSi. I also found this book extremely helpful because it was specific to that camera. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Rebel-450D-Companion/dp/0596520867/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1326226303&sr=8-3 I highly recommend both of these books. You will be comfortable shooting in manual very quickly!
Scott Kelby has a set of 3 books "The Digital Photography Book 1-3" which are full of 1 page lessons on how to get what you want from your camera. They're very easy to read can help you get to grips with you camera

Understanding Exposure is excellent, I always state this when people ask here!
