Picnik

January 20th, 2012
Just seen that they are closing it down!!! How do you feel about this??

Sorry if this thread has been done, haven't seen one yet :-)
January 20th, 2012
What? Why?
January 20th, 2012
What? I just paid for a year's subscription - gutted - really like the processing....although I am loving snapseed on my iPhone - will have to check out if they have an app for my mac.

Wonder if I'll get a refund?
January 20th, 2012
Says they are moving to Google+ end of April.
January 20th, 2012
@sharonaddison
According to the website, they are giving full refunds.
January 20th, 2012
It says on their blog they will be issuing refunds. It's not shutting down until April.
January 20th, 2012
Google has canned Picnik from April 19th......got to say not at all surprised I'm afraid....I posted last week about Apple shelving the MobileMe galleries....sadly didn't get a single reply so assumed that no one on here used them.

Everyone is getting out of hosting pics it seems....costing too much server space possibly? :(
January 20th, 2012
Moving to google+ don't know all the details, they are giving every one 'free' premium access until it shuts, better bloody give refunds!
January 20th, 2012
so just checked the website, closing in April, which is a shame, and they are issuing refunds - a good piece of news is that the premium version is free for all until it closes...so perhaps we need a topic that is titled "Picnik is closing, but premium is free until then"....or something like that
January 20th, 2012
What's google+? I only use picassa and picnik because my editing skills are virtually non existant :s
January 20th, 2012
Gutted!! Just discoved picnik and signed up as I love the easy interface for a novice like myself, can anyone recommend any similar or better software or should I just get photoshop?
January 20th, 2012
I'm with Naomi on wondering what Google+ is.
January 20th, 2012
sad face :-(
January 20th, 2012
Think facebook for photographers. :)

You can see my G+ profile here

www.BrendanGPlus.com
January 20th, 2012
Oh what you may find is that editing will be free on g+ so they can complete with Facebook, so I feel it is a good thing.
January 20th, 2012
@naomi I'm with you here Naomi. I can't work out other editing programmes. I found picnik so easy to use. I'm utterly bereft :o( If anyone can recommend any other online editing sites I'd be really grateful.
January 20th, 2012
This sucks. However, I highly recommend the pixlr editors. They are also free.
The company that makes it (Autodesk) is a well known software publisher.

Pixlr.com - http://pixlr.com/
http://pixlr.com/o-matic/ (Easy Peasy to use. All edits are preset, just click & go)
http://pixlr.com/express/ (A more advanced version of the preset editor)
http://pixlr.com/editor/ (The full blown editor version)
January 20th, 2012
Google+. = Facebook clone. This is all about money, not enough people have signed up for + accounts they want Picnik users to migrate over. The more users on Google plus the more money they make.

I love loads of stuff Google do I.E. Email, search engine etc, but hell it's not good for one player to dominate on so many fronts so NO TO GOOGLE+
January 20th, 2012
Had a look at what G+ offers. It's basically the same interface but with fewer options. No textures, for example...
January 20th, 2012
@lluniau Yeah, I beleve picassa is basically piknic, but a cut down version.
January 20th, 2012
@pete21 Yes, but there's more flexibility with contrasts and exposure within Picnik/G+ than there is within Picasa. What's on G+ seems more like a basic version of Picnik without the option for the Premium version.
January 20th, 2012
@pete21 You got the point Pete! I'm being quite easy going on things like this first thought. It's all right I will just have a G+ as well then. You are right, it's not good if one company gets into a monopolistic situation. I'm against that. Staying on Fb and will learn Photoshop better. :) Plus I'm sure there are or will be other free editing sites.
January 20th, 2012
@lluniau ah ok, I suppose there's no way to access this without an account lol. I don't care as I'll be doing everything in Photoshop from now on but my other half will be, um interested as she is a Piknic addict!
January 20th, 2012
@pete21 I also forgot - there's also no cloning, dodging, burning in the G+ version (just like the free Picnik version) which I've got used to in the Premium version of Picnik.
January 21st, 2012
@renelou Thank you very much for those links. I'd never heard of this one before. I've just had a quick look and I think I like the way it looks. I think I could easily get used to the Express version - thanks! Panic's over @psychographer :)

The Full version scares me a little because it looks a little like Photoshop (which I've never learnt how to use). I've never used layers for example (and to be honest, I'm not even sure I know what they are). Where/how did you learn stuff like that?
January 21st, 2012
Oh nooooo this is bad bad news :-( I will be lost without it!!
January 21st, 2012
I use the orton feature a lot. Can anyone tell me another photo editing programme that can do this?
January 21st, 2012
I just started using it for the first time last week and bought the fill version this.past weekend...did I curse it?
January 21st, 2012
@sarahricho It said on my notification they are giving full refunds...I just signed up for this,,,because it is sooooo easy. I'm so bummed!! Guess we will have to wait to see what the Google =+ is.
January 21st, 2012
Just saw it. So pissed and bummed at the same time. I use it all the time. My husband just bought me Photoshop Elements for Christmas and I am still struggling to understand how to use it. Guess I better learn fast.
January 21st, 2012
@lluniau I've gone to YouTube and searched for layers tutorials. There are quite a few to choose from.

I mainly use the Express version of Pixlr. The processing in this photo of mine was edited using it, except for the crop, which I did in Picnik.

;-(
January 21st, 2012
This news totally sux!
January 21st, 2012
I think it sucks there taken it away, its a easy program that wont scare away people just getting into photo editing and makes it real easy to use. I wont use G+ it can lick my boot for all I care. This is just a kick in the gut to there customers
January 21st, 2012
@naomi Google+ is like a MUCH better FaceBook owned by Google. Very simple, very minimal, and great social networking. Plus, unlike FaceBook, when you upload your work to share it, they DON'T claim ownership of it. ;)
January 21st, 2012
@psychographer I don't think you'll have to find another, once it's added into Google+, then if you have a Google+ account it'll be free to use when you upload your photos, like FotoFlexer is for Photobucket. :) They're free, so maybe, if you can still use Picnik, it'll be worth it? Better than FaceBook anyway.

@agima - Definitely a good thing. lol In FaceBook's Terms of Service, it's stated that when you upload your work to share, you're granting FaceBook "a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License)." So pretty much, they own the right to use your work, for free, whenever they want. If people begin using Google+ instead, not only will they have access to Picnik, but Google+ explicitly says in their terms that they DON'T own any work in anyway. I think moving Picnik over to get people to switch to Google+ is an awesome idea, even if it's just for that!
January 21st, 2012
@toxicalice92 that is why I dont use facebook... Oh not to mention its crap and I always had problems uploading.... :)
January 21st, 2012
@agima Haha, FaceBook came out when I was probably about 14, so my mom let me have one just so I didn't go to MySpace. They've begun revamping it, though, AGAIN, and I'm deleting everything soon, one by one. Luckily, I have a mark, and FaceBook's not allowed to alter images, so anything with a calling card is pretty much safe, since they can't make it their own. I will say, though, I've never had problem uploading. lol
January 21st, 2012
:(I found out yesterday.I also thought that Picnik was easy to use and it's the programme I use for so long...
January 21st, 2012
:-( too bad, I really enjoyed Picnik. Will check out the Pixlr editors. Does anyone have any other suggestions on good online editors?
January 21st, 2012
@toxicalice92 just a spring chicken hey....
January 21st, 2012
gutted.... a really fantastic site -- easy to use, vast choice. I hate that Google is this massive monopoly giant. ;-(
what is everyone else using in its place then?
January 21st, 2012
I am sooooooooooo distressed over this piknik closing thing. I love piknik....easy to use, fun, has lots of great edits I am hearing you guys say are not available in other free or easy programs. This is a sad day.
January 21st, 2012
there is a petition going on....not sure if it would do any good. http://www.change.org/petitions/google-dont-close-down-picnik#
January 21st, 2012
@agima lol That was five years ago. And a deletion of it is loonngg overdue. And I have adequate reasoning now, no my family who "wants to keep in contact," (criticize, haha) can either move to Google or not.
January 22nd, 2012
@nzmamatotwo www.befunky.com is an online editor like Picnik and it has "orton style" among many other effects.
January 23rd, 2012
@renelou i love you!! i just did a quick edit on pixlr and found an effect that i've been wanting thru picnik, but couldn't get. still upset that picnik is closing though. this lessens the blow considerably!! thanks sooo much! you're an absolute doll!
January 23rd, 2012
@myautofocuslife thanks to you as well! befunky has some fun stuff too!!
January 25th, 2012
@andiejaye OMG I've just noticed your profile picture is just like mine. Only better. Oh well, I'm just a newbie. What I was going to ask is about pixir. Do you have to upload your pics to the website to edit or is there a download version? We have a dodgy internet connection here and I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
January 25th, 2012
I do love Picnik and was upset when I saw it was to close. I also use photoshop and Picasa but found picnik fun and easy to use.
February 29th, 2012
@joannapayne it's been awhile, sorry! look at those profile pics! not sure with pixlr. have only played with it once. still milking picnik for all it's worth... ahha
