I'm thinking of joining a local photography club, where I'll be in a room with live people and everything! Anyone else here belong to one? Let me know about yours and what you think about it and stuff. This one has membership dues and activities like little competitions (I would have to enter as a novice, being new), and sometimes field trips. Could be awesome.....maybe?
I think so, and once I am back and active I would like to join one myself. Oh, funny story, I was in the Docs office yesterday randomly sitting next to a quite nice lady and then one behind me. They said the name Paula and all three of us looked up and said yes.
I joined in one on www.meetup.com I have attended one meetup and it was a lot of fun. I got to use the others equipment that I have never had access to before....lots of fun. Do it and you won't regret it.
I think like most clubs, it will depend on the people in it. I tried one and dropped out quickly because they were very busy being uppity and not friendly to the new folk. I am looking into another one that seems much friendlier.
@shadesofgrey This one is through meetup.com. :-) It almost feels like it's the next logical step for me, especially since I like out in the country and don't know many peeps out there.
Smugmug is one of the best photo clubs I've been to and there is one in most major cities! Just do a google search for your city and you should probably find something close by. Good for learning, practicing and networking!
It depends upon the group itself and how well your and their interests are compatible. Paula - @brumbe - they say that their are guest speakers, but not who they are and what their topic is, The website needs work!
I am joining one too in the Spring they are not too active this time of year so I thought I'd leave it until Spring but this one does day trips, Art Exhibitions and sales of work, group buys and also classes so it sounds pretty good its just £12 a year to join and £3 a session inc refreshments so its not going to break the bank.
@hjbenson we could join, but reading white text on white photos is a bit difficult, so I am not sure if we can be guest or must pay first. We should start our own and come up with an awesome website.
When I first started, I joined the one in london. Strangely enough its called the camera club :)
Its basically a fixed place (has been for ages) and you can sign up for the various classes they run (8 shooters per class) or you can rent the studios yourself and source your model for your shoot.
I found that after a while, the studio started getting too sterile and shabby and i branched out to do my own thing. That said, the experience I got from there was invaluable, I highly recommend doing it!
I'm a member of a local club here in Hampshire, and as with all clubs you will get some members who are in a "closed" group but then there are others who are more than willing and able to share the wealth of knowledge and experience - I would whole heartedly recommend it!!
I'm going to join my university's photographic society this year, which will probably be filled with fine arts students and hipsters, but I think I can handle it :P
@shadesofgrey Thanks! I think it'll be fun...AND you can use film or digital...this might be what finally makes me try that 1939 German Retinette that I have. :-)
I belong to a camera club and it is great! I've met so many nice people. We do a field trip every month, a meeting once a month, and competition every other month. It really is fu n to be in a group that enjoys the same hobby.
I belong to a photography club that meets once a month. We have monthly theme competitions. We have programs, a rare field trip, speakers, videos for motivation & training, and some sharing of techniques and/or equipment. We sponsor a photo contest at a county fair, which is a pretty big deal for here. I find the other photographers friendly and helpful. Most of them do little editing and have really good eyes for what makes a good shot. I like being in a group of people who share the same hobby and understand my hobby.
I think I will take a photography class.....not join a club. If there is such a thing. Maybe this summer, or otherwise, I will not have time to do it. Let us know how you like it if you go to a club.
@5unflow3r
I think the Philly Photo Society is not looking for new members based on this awful designed webpage that may or may not provide any actual information
