Places to Photograph Near Tucson, AZ

February 11th, 2012
Hello All! I will be traveling to Arizona for the first time in March. Most of my time is planned already as I will be visiting my brother, but I have one day free when he is in class. I will be staying in Tucson the night before but traveling down to Sierra Vista at some point that day (it doesn't really matter when). I am looking for some suggestions as to places to photograph in the Tucson/Sierra Vista area. I was thinking of Saguaro National Park, but I didn't know if there were any particular trails or areas of the park I should pay attention to. Also, I didn't know if there was anything in Tucson proper worth checking out. Thank you for your suggestions!

@appaloosa05 I've actually never been to Saguaro National Park even though I live in Tucson. Have you considered/ or visited Tombstone yet? Or Gammon's Gulch? Or, if you are here before March, the sandhill cranes that visit Willcox (this is absolutely amazing site where what seems to me to be thousands of cranes fly in)? These aren't in Tucson proper but are relatively close to Tucson.

You may also be interested in the "White Dove of the Desert" (San Xavier del Bac) which is near Tucson

Tombstone:

Also, near Tombstone is near Boothill but I don't have any photos on my project from there to show you.

Tohono Chul is a cool place to hike and is where I get a lot of my hummingbird photos (the hummingbirds aren't shy there and there's lots of them). Also, if you are here in the spring (March/April) they had probably 5-10 nesting hummingbirds. It is also in Tucson:

Willcox:

Gammon's Gulch:

The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is a lot of fun (mostly outdoor trails):

In the evening, near Pinnacle Peak restuarant, there is Trail Dust Town which is very small but it has Pinnacle Peak, a tiny town, and plays. But it also is an evening thing:

Sabino Canyon is supposed to be a lot like Saguaro National Park (I don't know though, I've never been to Saguaro National Park):

The Tucson zoo currently has baby lion cubs that you might be interested in seeing:

Also, the Botanical Gardens in Tucson proper are nice.

A lot of people loved the biosphere2, I actually hated it, but it is considered by many as must see:

One more thing, it isn't a place you can take photos but is definitely a cool place for a photographer to visit, the Museum for Creative Photography has an Ansel Adams collection and I believe if you make an appointment they are willing to show off the whole collection. If you don't make an appointment I think they display like six of his photos and then in their downstairs exhibit they've got other photographers work.

My brother and I are planning on visiting Tombstone together, along with hiking and horsebackriding near Sierra Vista. Thank you for the suggestions!
