Now that I've grabbed your attention... how do you deal with parties when it comes to your camera and accidents?
I'm a uni student and once in a while a drink or two will turn into more. Usually I decide before I leave whether I'm drinking or taking pictures, but I would just love to be able to bring my camera without excluding myself from drinking (which in Denmark is known as socializing), and hanging on to it for dear life in fear that someone will spill something on it (it’s really not a pretty sight).
I've considered buying a pocket camera because at least I could put that away without being too afraid that someone would ruin or steal it. Still, the ones I've had so far have produced lousy pictures (in dark rooms and bars, that is) and I don't know if it's worth it? It's not like I have a lot of money to spend on an extra camera that will most likely be ruined or stolen at some point, especially if it's just going to produce muddy pictures.
So, what's the best approach, in your opinion? Other than learning to fold my camera into pocket size ;)
Get a decent PS? I don't know, I just drink and take pictures if I have to. I end up taking some pretty funky shots that would never have happened without the drink haha
If you are worried about spills, you can get a plastic cover for it. I don't drink and shoot because I am very clumsy as is and I'd be sure to drop my camera. Sometimes there are moments to be lived and some are meant to be captured is my motto to keep my equipment safe.
Put your camera in a ziptop bag and seal it up. Cut an opening in the bag for the lens. Use a hair scrunchy or other stretchy item that will allow the lens to move a bit during focusing, but also seal that open end of the bag. Works great.
Get a waterproof P&S. That way not only can you store it easily in your pocket, you can rescue it from spills. Most of them have some shock proofing too in case you drop them. :-) My daughter has a tiny Fuji Film camera that can go into the pool and takes great pix. Olympus makes some nice "hard to kill" cameras too.
I had a uTough Olympus which was indestructible and great for social gatherings that included alcohol, but I did manage to kill it eventually. It took pretty good indoor party shots. But even seriously think about getting an underwater dive casing, these look very awkward and clumsy, but you'll never lose it, and it can protect your DSLR. I used a bridging SLR one time in a seriously wet Rainforest and the dive camera housing was perfect. Just looks weird above water.
Depending on what quality shots (pun intended) you want, you could take the one time use film camers. They do have pretty good rersults, built in flash, and low cost, verses any point and shoot, or other hybred cameras.
I'll look into either getting some sort of cover for my cam or one of the P&S ones you've mentioned. It would be nice to take pictures without standing at the ready with a roll of paper towels, 10 meter away from my subjects ;)
@izzymathie I think it would be a bit too expensive in the long run. Plus, those films always just get put away for a few hundred years, it seems. But it would make sure I had a lot of candid pictures for sure! :D
@scatochef My phone camera sucks even in daylight, using it when it's dark it like taking pictures of black holes, sadly.
