I can't make up my mind...need your help. I have $1,000 budget for a new lens. My criteria is wide angle and f/2.8. I was looking at a used canon 17-55mm for $915...but then there is the Tamron 17-50mm. If i go for the Tamron I would have money left over for, maybe, a hot show flash that is on my list...or a cute epiphanie camera bag i want (not so high on the importance level really).
Anyone have experience with these lenses? Any other suggestion on comparable lenses I could get within my budget?
Am a nikon user, so no experience of your lens, but I have bought a tamron lens twice and both times found them a bit rubbish. I suggest doing research on the web on the lens before you buy, perhaps save a little longer to get some really good lenses?!
Enjoy shopping for new toys :-)
I have the Tamron. It is a super sharp lens, even at f/2.8. A lot of 3rd party lenses are rubbish, but this isn't one of them. I have Nikon gear, so don't know how it compares to the Canon.
i had my doubts about 3rd party lenses but the reviews were really good and so i bought the tokina 11-16mm and simply love it. it's fast,
wide and sharp. works particularly well on my 7d which isn't a full frame. and i believe it's under 1000 too.
@mikew@beadedgalaxy@lakruijf Thank you for your input. I feel better about going with Tamron. Looks like i will be able to get other goodies :-) BTW - I will be using this lens with a canon T3i, i realized i never specified what type of camera i have.
Reading reviews helps for any lens. Even Canon, Nikon, etc. produce lenses which have issues. Third party lens manufacturers are typically more of a mixed bag.
@lilbudhha Thanks, yeah, I've been reading reviews for a few weeks now...this is my last place for opinions before i just make the decision. I want a hot shoe flash, so I will most likely go for the tamron.
I have a Tamron AF 70-300mm 1:4-5:6 Tele-Macro (1:2) lens. When first I bought it, it was because it was a cheap 300mm lens. It does feel cheap to the touch, it's noisy and slow. And the macro may lock up if you're not paying attention (easily unlocked...). But in the end I feel I got a good deal anyway; the macro has given me some amazing pictures, and I've been able to catch birds in flight at 300mm. So Tamron may be cheap, but you might get a lot out of it.
@bankmann@timandelke Thank you for your input. I decided to go for the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and a speedlite 430ex ii. I feel very good about my choices :-)
I have the Tamron 17-50 (for Nikon), stabilized version. I'm very happy with it and I don't regret the choice. I also have the stabilized Tamron 70-300 and I also love it. I wouldn't pay 2 or 3 times more to have the Nikon equivalent. There would probably be a slight quality difference on some photos but to me it's not worth the price difference.
@traeumerlein87@jreyna I know absolutely nothing about the lenses but...I do know that if you have any sewing ability whatsoever, you can turn any cute bag into a camera bag and not have to spend the extra cash on the bag itself. This way, you can save your money and use the insert that you just made in any bag you want and you can buy lots and lots of bags!!!! Seriously, found the insert on pinterest and just made my own. So easy and then you can switch it out to whatever bag you'de like. Doesnt have to be a camera bag. Hit TJMaxx- tons of choices!! :)
@katiebrenkert Yes, i actually do see and thought about doing that :-) i just need the squishy material... Sounds like trip to the fabric store is in order !!!

While I haven't used the Tamron lens, I have seen some pros using them but not for anything serious.
I guess it depends on what you want out of it?
I tend to think at this price bracket most of the lens would be similar in build quality and performance.
