Hi just wondered if you would be kind enough to choose between these 2 photos, I started a photography course last week and our homework is to take a photo of a bottle, or if you have any other ideas, thank you for looking
It depends on what you want to say about the bottle. I prefer the first one because it contextualises the bottle, suggesting that its shape is "better" than those behind... it is better without the vignette.
Although the reflections in the second image are lovely, I find the geometry of the corner at odds with the organic nature of the bottle.
I would be curious to see it in all B&W, I agree I like the bottles in the background as it does suggest that the one in front is far superior, but for some reason the colors are distracting and pull my eyes to the background. I was wondering if it were all in the same tones of B&W how that would work. If you do one in B&W, i would love for you to reply to me soI can see it :)
@shirljess Thank you, I will give that a go in the morning as I've just turned it all of and climbed into bed, I tried just the bottle on it's own in B&W but I thought it needed the gold top but I'm interested to see what that pic looks like
@bec1110 I dislike dislike dislike vignettes like the first one. It might just be me, but I find it far too overbearing/distracting. Artificially-added vignettes should be subtle at most.
I do however, love the second one. It's very sleek, clean and polished and I love that there are no distracting features.
Don't vignette the picture, first of all. Secondly, the bottle has raised detail. Work with the light to show as much of it as possible without. Maybe try a white board behind it so you isolate only this bottle.
It's such a beautiful and intricate piece, I think it deserves to stand alone with as simple a background as possible. I wouldn't even do a reflection.

Thank you all, guess it's back to the drawing board lol, I get the idea that the 1st one is a definate NO lol so it's not going to be that one thanks again
Scrolling through all your options I still like the second shot best. It focuses on the bottle, has a classy reflection and is crisp and clean with no distractions pulling you away from the subject.
the second has lost almost all of its detail, and the reflection just looks like a very light shadow to me. I agree with those that say the first one because the DoF you use makes the bottle that is the focus of the composition seem like it won first place and all those other bottles are jealous losers.
I think the whole thing with the bottles in the background being distractions must be a personality thing, because for me, personally, the blurred bottles in the background make me look at the bottle in the foreground longer. There's nothing in the 2nd one to make me want to look at the picture for more than a few seconds and one important thing about photography is, even if people HATE it.... you want them to spend time LOOKING.
Now, I don't know the specifics of your assignment, so it could be that the instructor wants nothing in the photo but a bottle, if that's the case, the 2nd one is the way to go, but you really need to find a way to bring out the detail of the bottle if you go that route.
Thank You all for taking time out to comment, still need to think about which one to take lol but am about to have another play to see if I can get some more of the detailing on the bottle to show up, Thanks again
I like the first one, without the vignette and probably in color. The bottle itself is too dark to do in B&W without more white to contrast with it. However, the second image is much more sharper than the first.
If you decide to redo the image altogether here are my tips: keep the composition of the first one. The "story" its telling is much more compelling with the DOF you have. Watch your focus, try to make the image as in focus and tack sharp as possible. And maybe allow a tiny bit more light to fall on the bottle so its not as dark.

Thank you I did redo but the light was not as good today so just took the 2 in they got good reviews from fellow students, this week's homework is shapes and shadows and i have no idea yet what to do but have now learnt to use manual focus and come off AWB so now fully manual settings :)
I like the first one best....the background objects do give it context and because they are out of focus, make me wonder...the second one is too plain for my tastes I think. About the dark stuff around the first one....I think it was too dark, but then without it, it was not quite right either. I would work in just a tad of it by choosing vignette and then "fade" back in your photo to about 90 percent or something...and , you can drag around and change the hue to be more subtle.....you might try that.
Personally I like the black and white one of the first the most.
It's more interesting than the second one by itself, without the distracting colors of the first one in color.
I also like the angle a little better, as well.

I like the clean simplicity of it.

Just thought I'd show you the B&W x
