@kph129 -- For me, I do it on the cheap... I have a black cloth that I use for the background. I use incense sticks for the smoke. I do mine in complete darkness and I make sure to shine a big maglite on the smoke. Also, I use an off camera flash with a snoot or a kraft dinner box to direct the light towards my smoke. I make sure that the flash does not hit the background. I have a piece of white cardboard that I use as a reflector to bounce more light on the smoke. The smoke colour is done in photoshop.

I took this shot before I had an off cam flash. I tried all kinds of tricks and failed miserably at all of them. After about an hour of swearing I just held the incense out at arms length, against a black background that was way far away and used my on camera flash. Lots of editing with highlights and blacks in LR...but it turned out ok. I swore I'd never do it again....but maybe I will now that I have the right gear!

This is an old one now, but it's the only one i've done so far..

@gareauk1 Can you please give a short description about how to shoot and process this. I never tried something like this, but would like to do. Really wonderful.
June 7th, 2012
@djepie -- Checkout my description that I gave earlier to @kph129... I usually do this in a dark room. Set the ISO to 200. I found if I set it at 100, the images weren't as bright. As for processing it, I just brightened up the image, lowered the levels of the background so they were completely black. Then added a gradient to the smoke to give it some colour. If you want white background, all you have to do is invert it. Good Luck!
