First possible sale

August 11th, 2012
I was approached last week by a friend of mine who wants to buy one of my photos to used in a mailer of his. Actually, the mailer would be postcards with my image on one side and information for his business on the other.

I have no idea what to charge or how to go about figuring it out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Don't have any suggestions, but Congratulations!

Congratulations :)
I am not a professional so this is just a few ideas :)
I am really not sure on price sorry but I am thinking it may be a good idea to have a contact of sale. Something that states what the photo can be used for (ie: only the mailer), any conditions of use (eg: the photographer must be acknowledged, the photo can not be altered in anyway etc) and that you still own the copyrights to the picture and you can use it for your own promotion. That just covers you and them and there is no confusion. Hope that helps :)

@webfoot Nice and congrats Paul. I have some guideline docs regarding going pro, but I'll have to dig them up. I'll let you know.

How exciting, congratulations

since its going to be used for advertising, you want to make sure you're only selling the right to use it, not the image itself.

Congratulations Paul and such an honor!! So exciting. As for what to charge, I have been struggling with this too. Pricing seems to be all over the place for photography. I sure wish you the best and think you have amazing talent!

Hey, well done. How exciting!

congratulations, that's really affirming and a great way to go.

A contract making it clear what is being sold would definitely seem necessary, as Jeff Walker said. @jsw0109

Just some thoughts:
Do you want a one off lump sum or do you want royalties every time it's used?
Do you want just this image as a postcard or do you want to release it for other uses?

How much do you want?

It is much easier if you licence the image on a royalty free basis and charge him for the size he wants.

Of course you can charge for royalties but them you have to do down the path on how many impressions, what media, what state, etc etc... It really starts to turn into a bit of work.

if was me, I would charge him around $40 with the condition that he can only use it for that one-off promotion and that his business was not adult or illegal.

Thank you all for your responses. I've got a pretty good handle on what's going to happen now, partially because of your responses. I'll let you know how it all plays out in the near future.
