Its that time again for those of you who participate you are possibly already aware that next Friday the 28th of September is Roll In A Day day over on Flickr. This time around they have chosen the theme of abstract. Will anyone be taking part? I might push a roll through my point and shoot Nikon while I am travelling to and fro.
@peterdegraaff Cool, I thought you didn't have one from your comments on Flickr, maybe I remembered wrong. I haven't used mine much lately as I never seem to get much sun shine on my days off and I think they benefit from a little help off mother nature.
Actually thinking back I vaguely do remember your comment, you was referring to the fact mine was on digital I think
@ayearinthelifeof freaky lens flare taken with Holga lens on Olympus EPL-1. It is like the flare is exploding on lens and camera sensor, like laser or almost solid particles.
I'll be traveling that day so it may be tricky to get a whole roll of abstract whilst being stuck in a car, but I'll give it a try! It's been too long since I participated and am keen to play with the OM10 that I've been neglecting a little! Thanks for posting this :)
@peterdegraaff Lovely!! You have what I call the Holga Paw print, its a lovely shape....
I dunno what happened here, or where the sun is positioned as this was shot from a moving car but I got cloud flare! I have the Macro lens, they are spectacular but very very finnicky to work with. 30mm focus means 30mm, 31mm and you have blown it haha
The extra vignetting is caused by the telephoto lens, you always get the shape of that one and it is more pronounced when you use the wide lens as well. The only lens I have never tried despite owning them are the close up lens which range from I dunno upto five metres ha.
@ayearinthelifeof Glad you identified the paw print. Never really though of it before. Will be chasing now. @aleksandra hooray you got the bit. @blahblahblah Which lens? Those early retinettes are very cool and well made.
Yes. I must participate. I'll be shooting Kodak t-max 100 b&w. AND developing that roll at home. This might be the only thing that finally pushes me to develop my film! Off to find a suitable negative scanner...
@peterdegraaff It appears all over the place, I will have to find the image. I shot a macro of some parsley leaves and it is all over the picture, its amazing. At least I think it is :0)
@aleksandra Did you use the camera without one? I have a nice looking OM Telephoto lens and I'm sure it was the OM10 that was in my price range. I know little about olympus but would love something cheap to try this lens on. I can't find an OM to PK adapter or I would just try it that way.
@peterdegraaff Peter its a Rodenstock Reomar 45mm, I think the series before had the Scheider Krauznach lens. But yes it is very well and everything is controlled on the lens barrel even the self timer and ASA setting.
not a hope for me... my interest in abstract is limited at best and in any event i'll be spending the day in the car travelling... a bummer really - i was thinking about looking into this and maybe giving it a go...
@peterdegraaff Yep, finally! Very excited to try it out!
@ayearinthelifeof I've run one roll through it without the manual adapter but haven't had it developed yet so am unsure of the results of this camera. Its a compact little slr body that is much lighter than my Praktica, but still seems very solid. I was lucky to get mine from a friend, it was her dad's and she's not into photography. They are on the cheaper side of vintage cams from what I've seen on ebay.
@northy I bet there are lots of abstract things in a car, beside the edge of the road, motion blur, and at truck stop and by the roadside.mit also depends how you define abstract. In my view abstract can mean anything, even a theoretical expression of a concept. There is a tendency to think of abstract as meaning macro, but it could be a ultra wide image with a single blade of grass. @ayearinthelifeof just popped hola on Olympus and got lots of little paws from some nice flares. Think it is because of the way pinholes are constructed in Holga as circle of holes around main one. Agree with @aleksandra Olympus cameras tend not to be overpriced on eBay. The OM series is great place to start as are the mju p&s cameras, or any of 35 series
I have took the screw out of mine and it focuses passed infinity, the label fell off for the focus so for focus marks I used gloss paint and I have a red primer telling me where to stop focusing so as the lens doesn't drop off!
@peterdegraaff yeah... not saying i couldn't do it... just as a theme it doesn't appeal much... of course, 7 hours in the car will bore me to tears and so i'll prolly start shooting randomly just for something to do, so who knows... i'm rapidly approaching the point where i'll be packing more camera gear than shoes!
@northy I went to Bali with two pairs of shoes and 5 cameras. Came back with 8 cameras. I think cameras are far more useful. Sandals and runners. That's all you need.
@ayearinthelifeof you can post in a previous year, ruins your % through the project though. I'm off to find you all on Flickr then! Ps why are you up so early? The photo I just posted will explain why I am!
@charli321 I often do a roll in a day on any day. The other day I did three rolls with three different cameras with three different types of film, just to see. Name a day and I'll be in
I'm up for a roll in a day 365 project, but it would have to be a better theme than abstract, and since we can't post the whole roll, we could have two posts, saturday and sunday, so like shoot a roll and upload your best two. could call it 'Shoot silver halide saturday sunday'
that's a pretty catchy tag, alliteration works.
@chewyteeth yeah - but the acronym is lame... Ya'all want something like "film is alive today" (sorry - it should be better than that but I have a migraine, I haven't had my morning frappa, and I'm sitting in a gym w a gazillion munchkins getting sorted for basketball ;p)
It's been a little while since I RIADed, and my cameras are stacking up. I'll probably push at least three over the weekend. I like the idea of a 365 offshoot as well, maybe with a catchy tag like "Mostly I Like Film" or the associated acronym "MILF"... though in retrospect that might be taken out of context... ;)
@chewyteeth@grizzlysghost this is starting to remind me of a time some 20 years ago when we spent more time thinking of the name and team colours than playing the game ;p how about plain 'n simple "film lives" and then a number for tagging... so film-lives-1 would be the tag the first week... etc...
and i don't quite know how the time lag works... since processing will take a couple days and i would have to wait until the weekdays most times to get it processed...
Could plan an October one, maybe first week in October, 7th 8th is the saturday sunday I think. film-lives-1 with a theme. but I think we need a manifesto. Like shoot film all week and post your best two on saturday and sunday, something which takes into account the time lag for developing. and broad themes so everyone can get on it.
erm
just pour it in the empty developer tank to see how much is needed. Erm, I just got Rodinal which is 1:50 dillution, so no don't use it neat, find the manufacturers instructions, the more diluted the longer it takes. Yes the stop and fix can be reused, the fix about 20 times, the stop might be colour coded and turn purple when its done with. drip dry negatives in a warm place
I like the idea of shooting over a week and posting two days. Shooting one whole roll in a day can be daunting. Especially when you have a three-year-old tagging along. They just don't find the beauty in some things.
I'm fine with any tag, though ASS and MILF did make me chuckle. Like I am still in junior high.
@cmc1200@chewyteeth What Chewy just said, in fact I JUST finished developing a roll of Lomo 100. Just now!
I used D76 stock, but will switch to 1:1 because I'm running low. I will have to develop longer (for example, the 8 mins it took tonight will be 14 with the 1:1), but hey, I got nothing but time! I hang the neg strip over the sink and "squeegee" with wet fingers then let dry about 2 hrs.
I like the idea of shooting through the week and posting our favorite couple on the weekend. I am all for "film-lives-1" since we are ALL already using film-lives. Right everyone? :)
Just had a good laugh. As a friend once said to me, if you want to get ahead in the world, it is not enough to learn the acronyms but more importantly be the one who makes them up. I'm happy to go with the flow so film-lives-1 is cool. Oh to be back in high school again, or then again...
@grizzlysghost You said " I am all for "film-lives-1" since we are ALL already using film-lives. Right everyone? :)". Care to expand on that for the benefit of this relative newcomer? I haven't been tagging my scans as such at all so far. By the way, I loved the Yashica photo :-)
To everyone: shoot all week and post over the weekend of 7/8th sounds just fine to me.
I haven't been doing film for about 10 years but as from this month I''ll have my main album completely analogue, So i'm in for any Idea, but the abstract film in a day is a bit to much for me right now.
@automaticslim Film users have been using the tag "film-lives" for a while now, but every now and then I find someone who hasn't been doing so :) The tag lets the rest of us find film shots more easily.
@blahblahblah I will be posting a couple this weekend from the rolls I take for the Flickr RIAD. I've actually already taken one roll early and posted a photo from it, tagged "film-lives-1" But I shoot film all of the time so every weekend works for me.
Actually thinking back I vaguely do remember your comment, you was referring to the fact mine was on digital I think

@ayearinthelifeof @blahblahblah @peterdegraaff @chewyteeth can we not just do our own 365 RIAD challenge on the Saturday?
that's me too. abstract???? wha!
I'm up for a roll in a day 365 project, but it would have to be a better theme than abstract, and since we can't post the whole roll, we could have two posts, saturday and sunday, so like shoot a roll and upload your best two. could call it 'Shoot silver halide saturday sunday'

I'm in, alliteration works for me
sounds a bit too evangelistic.
how about analog-saturday-sunday, tag ASS
;)

A little off topic, but I don't want to start a whole thread for a small question.
I just mixed my D-76 developer, my fixer, and stop bath. I will be processing one 35mm roll in a small two-reel tank. Questions:
Will about 8 oz be enough of each solution to cover that reel?
Do you dilute your developer 1:1? And I assume that's with water? Or should I just use it full-strength?
Do I keep both the fixer and stop bath after I've used it?
Do you "dry" your negatives with a cloth or just let them drip-dry?
Thanks! ...and wish me luck...

ooops, above.

Awesome. Thx! It all makes great sense, so I'll try it out tonight.
Here is a great dev chart to use: just plug in your film and developer and it spits out all kinds of times

To everyone: shoot all week and post over the weekend of 7/8th sounds just fine to me.
I notice on Flickr that the RIAD abstract seems defined to include surrealism in the thread
TGIF RIAD film-lives-1
