Im not a huge fan of watermarks but understand the reasons why it can be a benefit to have them. I prefer signature style, small unobtrusive ones. What programs do you use to make these? I have Lightroom, but it seems a little limited with the style of watermark you can add. I don't have photoshop to use. Any suggestions?
If you use Photoshop you can make a brush and stamp it wherever you want on the picture with whatever color suits you. You create it with a text box on a blank layer, capture the watermark with the marquis tool, then save it as a brush preset.
I think a lot people only think watermarks are there to offer some sort of protection and of course they can be easily removed. But what a lot of people are forgetting is they are also there to give credit. When your picture ends up on pinterest or some other site without credit to you a watermark is like your signature on a piece of art. Ive seem some really cool pics on pinterest but had no way of knowing who did them and had there been a water mark i could have easily found the photographer and followed thier work. So to say they are not necessary i disagree.
Have a look at my first picture I posted on here... Its got a watermark, my signature.. I got it as an app for iPhone and am happy with it. Its called iWatermark, in case anyone wants to use it.. :)

I personally dont like them at all, they are not necessary and/or protective.
they're very serious, see, I have a coffee table....
Oh you mean the name-graffitti-defacement type of watermark. yeah they're pretty stoopid.
