I've recently just got a Canon EOS 550D with a triple lens deal and extras from Jessops for under £600. Only been with the project a month so learning like crazy but I have found it's a real easy camera to plug & play!
I have a 600D, Canon T3i and i have used it my whole project and for more than a year. I took it to the sea where it got sprinkled by sea water drops, near huge cascades, got drips of paint in it. And all my equipment survived along with me. It's a fine choice and the best of its class.
Another underrated feature the t3i has is the external flash command ability. You can use flash off camera using infrared signals. No other camera of its class have it.
I love my CanonT3i.......from 2012. I understand the new model has some upgrades.......but this is my first dSLR and my first 35mm, so I know nothing else.
You could have a look in the browse tab and check under "cameras' to see what is popular on here - but I didn't have a clue and went to our local "photo warehouse" and compared the cameras in my price range for features that I wanted - I bought the Sony a35 and I'm very happy with it - I think most of us will say that about our own cameras (with a few notable exceptions) but we can only talk about the models we've used! Bear in mind that I am the rankest of amateurs but we all start somewhere!
Personally the Nikon is complicated enough. One day I will get around to using all the bits, but plenty of scope to learn with the D3100. As a complete novice, I'd certainly recommend it ! Happy Christmas
The jessops deal on the canon 550d is a good one. I have this camera and both lenses and they are a great starter package.
Definatly worth considering is the canon 600d with 18-55 IS lens for £439.
You would have enough cash to get another lens on both deals. Maybe a fixed one. Maybe a 50mm 1.8 Mk2 £99 or try and find a Mk2 on ebay for around £150ish.

You may need to copy and paste - also shows other deals around same price. Hope that helps...
All the best...

Good shopping!
For a long time I've been looking at the Nikon 3200 wth the lure of all those 24m megapixels...but are megapixels everything?
Can anyone give me pointers on things I should be looking for. Once thing I'm definitely not bothered about is Video options and on board editing.

Also check out this nugget of info. Shows what most cameras people are using on this site.
Most camera shops will hire out cameras ..try a few before you splash the cash :-)
I can do in camera HDR shots -
the camera will take the two shots and combine them in my camera - love, love this feature
I can do a double or triple exposure shot right in the camera! Most of the Canons didn't do that - perhaps some of the newest can
It has some great preset programs that i like
The ISO can go very high without the poor quality
It was my first DSLR and I love it
Does anyone have any tips of things I should be looking for?
