Hey all. I'm very interested in pursuing a career in photography this year. My question for the group: I don't have a website portfolio of my work to show prospective employers, but I do have a business page on Facebook. Is a FB page sufficient for showcasing one's work? Or do employers still see it as amateur? Thanks!
I find that most of my clients expect to be able to see examples on FB and also want to see a few of their shots on my FB page. I do have a website, but get Far more attention on Facebook
My concern is using it as a portfolio for employers, not clients. I've booked a few shoots with friends, and have featured those shoots on my page. But I'm looking for a job in photography. I'm worried that FB isn't professional enough.
Chris whilst Facebook is a fantastic way of promoting your business it is a god awful way of displaying a portfolio. Go with you own website, if finance's don't allow for this then even something like wix.com allows you to build a professional looking site, with much better options for displaying photographs.
I decided to do the same thing, I invested in Zenfolio which is a website made just for this! I love it, I boughy my own web address from godaddy.com, that cost $12.99 and then I bought the professional version of Zenfolio for $250/year. You can get by much cheaper than that but I wanted the full shopping cart and all the add on's. You can try it free for 30 days even without your own address.
Take a look at mine and you can see what I mean:
www.promise-photography.com
or you can go straight to zenfolio

I beleive there is another one out there called SmugMug that is very similar. I think if you are going to start a business you will definately want to invest in one of these sites. I still have my FB business page and I am very active on it but for all your client activity you really need a real website and a shopping cart!
I have an FB page but also a SmugMug site which is really cool as you can totally personalise it to how you want it, you do have to pay but it isn't very expensive & well worth it to show off your work!
I also paid the small amount for my own address from godaddy:
Facebook is a good advertising tool but a website looks so much nicer and you can tailor it to your taste. There are lots of free sites out there that are easy to use and set up. I have both a facebook page and a website (I use wix) but I also use photobucket which I can upload my photos to and password protect albums which the few clients I have had so far like and it gives them the option to share their photos, just like facebook does.
Hi there. I am trying to do the same thing this year. Thus far I only have a FB page, but will invest in a website once I feel I am ready with equipment, business sense and the like. I think a FB page is a good start. When I started mine in August, I was amazed at the response so it is a good way to reach out to people, probably even more so than a website. However, looking professional would require a website to be sure. Good luck.
@jocelynphotography I do have the FB site, and have a handful of followers.
