Both are great, the pm-1 is smaller but the G2 has a nice viewfinder, more controls that you can access easily on the body and a swivel screen I think.
@peterdegraaff What do you mean by that Peter? The Micro Four Thirds lenses are brand interchangeable, so how come the lens options are better for the EPL-1?
@primitiveprobe because the PEN and OM-D has on board stabilization but Panasonic is switched on at the lens. In my view the lens options are better, particularly with ultrawide from Olympus. The only Panasonic M43 lenses I would be interested in is the 42mm Leica but I would rather the Voigtlander noctilux
@peterdegraaff I would say that's more a camera body issue than lens. But of course, if image stabilization is the issue it's Olympus all the way as that also give image stabilization for the very good Panasonic primes that doesn't have in-lens stabilization.
@primitiveprobe It is a problem if you buy a panasonic and want to use Olympus lenses. The advantage of onboard image stabilsation is that it can be used for vintage lenses
@peterdegraaff Sure, if image stabilization is the decisive factor for buying Olympus or Panasonic, then buy Olympus. I fully agree with you there.
My only point is that any lens you can put on the PEN you can also put on the G2, but on the G2 one will have to live without image stabilization for most lenses, including Panasonic own prime lenses.
That might be a turn-off for some people, but I don't agree that means you have more lenses available for the PEN. I would've loved to own the OM-D but I find it too expensive, and the PEN's just don't do it for me.
Hi I'm a m43 junkie and I currently have the G2 (not the gh2) epl2 and the em5. My general experience with the older models is that epl is much more responsive, and better sensor quality than the panasonic. The G2 has a better control layout for serious shooting, also with evf its much better suited for bright days and working with long telephoto lenses. Both have been decent cameras for me, but the omd is such a huge jump in technology that it rivals my Nikon D7000 and has become my everyday shooter.
If I had to choose from the epl2 and the g2 Olympus wins hands down. I still often shoot with that camera and bring it as my backup.
On the IS subject I wouldn't include it as a major factor for a decision as there is so much fast cheap glass available for m43 that you can get away without the in body IS. Shooting with a 20mm f/1.7 that sets you back 300$ you're going to doing well on either body. Or if you are a little more adventurous grab the voigtlander f/0.95 I have the 25mm and love it. For a 10th the price of the leica its not 10th the quality.
Hope that helps.
