Can't get it off

Boo
my lens protecting lens that is...put it on wonky and now it is stuck :-( how can i unscrew it without wrecking the camera
February 9th, 2013
hahahahaha. Oh that's funny!
Probably not from a camera point of view though. Do you mean the UV filter? Mine was stuck too. Until this morning when I took the lens off the camera, and extended the lens as far as it will go and then got hold of the non moving parts at the end.

Not very technical and probably not even what you were talking about!
Good luck!

could be what I am talking about, who knows...LOL shall give that a go @nicolaeastwood

Wear rubber gloves (like the kitchen-cleaning variety) or wrap a rubber band around it; then unscrew gently. The tighter you grip the filter, the more it distorts, and the more it distorts, the more it wants to stay where it is :)

Boo
@grizzlysghost off to find the rubber gloves...this is so annoying and very irritating..lol
February 9th, 2013
@grizzlysghost great advice - shall remember this for next time! Thanks!
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@nicolaeastwood your suggestion...tried...still stuck
@grizzlysghost rubber gloves...grr...not working...even when i try to unscrew it lightly...
February 9th, 2013
I put my chip in backwards once. It took needle nose pliars to get it out and no I was not calm about it.
February 9th, 2013
I used a rubbery lid remover once when I couldn't turn the thingie that lets me remove the flash. Also, if you have a buddy at the local camera store they will fix it in a flash with no charge - my guhs are pretty helpful.

Boo
@aponi i am getting more annoyed with myself...LOL

@cdonohoue think i shall take it to my camera shop..they are very helpful there...I am sure they will help me...gawd, sometimes the small things in life drive us mad!
February 9th, 2013
try holding ice against the filter ring and getting it colder than the lens ... that may shrink it enough to loosen the threads.
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@dlaxton ooh off to raid the freezer
February 9th, 2013
I did this once it is sooooo annoying. I put a piece of the material that stops sat navs sliding on dash boards, on the table then put lens stuck end down and turned it round (well I walked round in a circle over it)with gentle pressure:) Hope you get it sorted
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@dlaxton cold...cold cold hands....still stuck
@pixiemac mmm off to give this a go

The pile of helping aids is growing on my kitchen table!
February 9th, 2013
Have you a hammer? Or chainsaw? Team of draft horses? That's how I feel when faced with a stubborn polarizer. ;)
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@grizzlysghost ooh the CHAINSAW! Actually I nearly cut my foot off last summer with an axe...don't think my husband will let me anywhere near the chainsaw!
February 9th, 2013
Make sure you've got auto focus turned off or you can break that too. I've had it happen and I went away and came back to it and it suddenly shifted - don't know why!!!
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@judithg I have given up. Too scared of breaking anything. Shall take it to the filter docs in the week.
February 9th, 2013
@grizzlysghost I used a bunch of woodpeckers once. After the squirrels tried. No wonder though - no poseable thumbs. @huvesaker sounds like you got a lot of advice. I've done the rubber jar opener once, which worked. This sounds elementary, sorry to insult you if it is - you are grabbing the barrel of the lens with one hand while grasping the thin lip of the filter with the other?
February 9th, 2013
I broke my auto focus trying to get mine off :(
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@emsabh tried it all
February 9th, 2013
Buy a new lens?
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@jase_h eek hoping i don't need to do that!
February 9th, 2013
Ease it, don't force it. Just like when a car is stuck in the snow. Loosen a little, tighten again, loosen, tighten, Don't apply too much force, but enough to make it move a bit. It may take a while but with patience, it will come off :)
February 9th, 2013
some filters expands when exposed to severe cold temp. hoya for one are like that though i am a loyal hoya user. putting ice on it will even make it tighter. dont force it as it will damage your lens permanently. try to keep it first in a much warmer place so that the fliter threads will loosen.
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@jasonparrish :-)
@imagenation will give it a go
February 9th, 2013
try putting it in a place with room temp or little bit warmer. let it stay there for a while and the threads will loosen naturally. remember not to force unscrewing it as it may damage the lens elements. if you are brave enough put the lens in a sealed plastic or thermal bag then soak or dip just the tip of the stuck filter in a warm water. it may be extreme but it works for me.
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@imagenation ooh nope..not brave enough :-)
February 9th, 2013
lol! what happened to your filter is called seizing. aluminum rings tend to ezpand when exposed to extreme cold environment compared to brass wherein it does not expand at all. b+w for one is made of brass but it is one of the most expensive filter out there.
February 9th, 2013
Boo
@imagenation probably taking the camera out in minus 20C hasn't helped things then? LOL
Hey ho...you live and learn :-)
February 9th, 2013
Mine was stuck for a good year. I was too scared to break the lens trying to get it off. Finally I asked a friend and he used way more force than me. He got it off but my lens is now toast. Auto focus wont work and even manual focus isn't working :( I wish I had just left it on!
February 9th, 2013
Interesting thread... Just bought second hand lense, which is great... Apart from the fact the Hoya uv filter is stuck on it! Await your progress @huvesaker with interest... Sitting in front of fire just now... Perhaps should have lense beside me??
February 9th, 2013
Might try a rubber jar gripper rather than the gloves. Sucks for you, but glad to see this post. I'll know now to be very careful screwing mine on from now on. Good luck to you.
February 9th, 2013
Thanks to your post, I vowed to try yet again to get my stuck UV filter off. With the help of rubber bands and rubber gloves and my husband, it finally came off! I hope that you have the same luck!
February 9th, 2013
Oh god, been there done that and what a nightmare it was.. In the end i decided to literally break it off..
February 10th, 2013
There are apparently things called filter spanners that grip the filter to get it off. Try googling, or else I am sure your camera shop will have them
February 10th, 2013
@michelle58 had a filter stuck to her lens for weeks... I cant remember how she got it off, Michelle?
February 10th, 2013
l tried lots of things , put camera lens down on mousepad then turning camera - use non slip jar opener, tried cooling camera down ....in the end my husband wrapped a cloth around the lens, then put it in his workshop vice ...l was lucky it came off without any damage -- now when l put it on l never tighten firmly and just for good measure l unscrew half a turn!!
Good luck l hope you get positive results!! @monika64

Lesson for everyone....... regularly remove your uv lens ... especially as most folks just use it as another layer of protection ...... Just going to do mine now !! ......... C%$p they were tight, but came off thankfully and now back on finger tight
Go and do yours NOW !!!!
