I can't speak about memory cards, but I had a corrupt hard drive in my computer once, just before I was due to do a back up (disaster!) and I got a programme off the net called Recover my Files, which was great and got back most of what I had lost. I've only ever used it on a hard drive but it says it does camera cards too. I expect other people will have better ideas/options but here's a link in case it's useful http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
i have gotten shots off of a corrupt card with recover my files. it seems to work if you don't shoot over them after formatting. if you just reformat the card in the camera, and then try to recover them, you should be able to get them off. if you shoot over them....no.
For anyone looking for info at a later date I didn't have much luck with some of the software but I managed to rescue about two thirds using stellar phoenix photo recovery including my son's birthday ones which were the ones I was upset about so that was good. @northy the successful software was one on your list so thanks again for your help. Really appreciated.
