Vintage Film camera question

July 5th, 2013
Hi all,

This is a question for the film camera gurus on 365- especially @grizzlysghost!

We are currently visiting my husband's family in Switzerland. My Father-in-law sold cameras in California back in the late 50's and early 60's. He still has a Canonflex with a canonflex 50mm 1.8 lens and a 135mm 2.5 lens. He tells me that this was the first model of SLR camera that Canon released.

He also has a Nikon F501 SLR with a 35-70mm 3.3-4.5 lens.

He's wondering what to do with them as they will be downsizing from their current home to an apartment in the coming year or two. He's talking about giving them to the local charity shop! NO, NO, NO!

I, of course, am interested in all the camera gear but know nothing about the cameras. I've never used the older SLR camera's. The SLR cameras I've had were later models! Can you guys give me some information about these two cameras? I'm going to ask politely if I can have them when he's ready to part with them! I certainly hope he doesn't give them away!

Thanks for any tips and wisdom my 365 friends can offer!

Cheers,

Terry

You will find many camera manuals for old cameras at his site. It is the starting point http://www.butkus.org/chinon/

@peterdegraaff Thanks Peter! I knew you and Aaron, among others, would be able to point me in the right direction!

@grizzlysghost Thanks Aaron! My father-in-law has told me that I'm welcome to the cameras. He can't remember what the problem is but he told me that the Nikon may need some kind of repair. It has a good lens with it so it will be worth taking anyway. And the Canon should be fine. So I'll be taking the gear home with me. Can't wait to give it a go! Maybe one day I'll be able to post a photo from the Canon here!

Luckily I have a great friend who owns a photo print shop which is one of the few in Melbourne to still process film. He does a lot of fine art printing so if I have anything worth printing, I know just the man to do it for me!
