Canon 60d / 100mm 2.8 L Macro Autofocus issues

August 3rd, 2013
I again seem to be having autofocus issues with my 60d body.

When I change the focus limiter switch on the lens, the camera refuses to gain autofocus within the new limits eg, on FULL, focus on roof of house, gets focus fine, change limiter to 0.3 - 0.5m and try to get focus within that range on a plant for example.........totally refuses!! This first happened in December, first the camera went to Canon....came back, same issue remained, then both lens and camera went to Canon in the end and after some 'tweaking' they were declared healthy.

Then when we went to Vietnam the focus went really soft (using the 17 -55 2.8 Canon lens ef-s), despite the camera's little green light in the viewfinder indicating it had found focus. I lost hundreds of shots :(. It went back to Canon who said the focus was awful and recalibrated it.

I guess what I am asking is, am I the only one that has such issues with the 60d and if not, how did you get yours fixed?

btw I don't get these issues on my 450d so I know it is not me :)

Caz
Mine will sometimes not focus, unless I point the camera at something further away, and then back again at my subject and then it's ok. I was thinking it was the lens, not the camera though ? It doesn't happen very often, thankfully. I'm so sorry you lost all those so photos, what an awful shame.

@cazann That's exactly what I have to do and as you say it isn't something that happens all the time. At the moment it will actually focus beautifully once it 'gets' it. I did ask Canon if they would pay for us to go back to Vietnam, but they declined!!

I have a 60d and the 100mm macro lens and have never had this issue although 90% of the time I manually focus my shots. Do you have the same issue when focussing manually ?

Sorry that you have and that your Vietnam trip shots were ruined.

Hi sorry to hear about your problem, I have a 60D and 100mm IS USM 2.8 macro lens and mine sometimes has a problem focusing but only in lowlight but in full light it works faultless as it should. hope you find a solution to a very bad problem.

@sewsharyn hi Sharyn, have always been able to successfully manually focus :) which is the saving grace really

@eosman David, thanks for replying, as you say, in low light mine could play up, but yesterday, it was outdoors in great sunlight. Think I will ring Canon again...the amount of times they have couriered it, it would have been cheaper for them to replace it.

@tstb Tineke, Hopefully it will be sorted soon, as I so want to love this camera, but I don't trust it not to let me down :(

I hope it not a common problem with that lens... I only got mine last week.. Good luck getting the camera fixed/replaced xx

@pixiemac I have the Canon 60d, and have sent it to Canon today to be looked at, as I've been having virtually the same issues. Thankfully it's still under warranty. Hope you got it sorted out?

@allisonraposa Hi Allison, Canon did a fine job of of sorting out the auto focus, which was a huge relief :) Hope yours comes back fighting fit
