Looking at purchasing the TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR DI II LD DSLR LENS for sony anyone have any experience /thoughts on it. Any comments would be appreciated thanks.
I do not have experience with that lens. I do have Sony A500 and have two Tamron lenses for it, 24-80mm an 200-500mm and use them for specific things, but they perform good. Tamron, as with any brand, makes some great lenses and some OK lenses. I have heard good things about the specific lens you are asking about..
They give it a really good review! Great value for money.
I have a Tamron 90mm macro lens and it's as good optically as the Canon equivalent, which is nearly triple the price, but has image stabilisation as an extra. It's seriously impressed me in regard of third party choices for lenses.
I've used that lens. It kicks ass. I bought the sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX, my cousin bought the Tamron. I found that the Tamron is significantly sharper, has less falloff and has less barrel distortion. If I still shot DX, I would have picked one up myself.
From what I've seen the VC version isn't as sharp, and VR isn't as important at wider angles anyway.
@abirkill Hi Alexis and any other 365er, Do you have any experience, knowledge of the Nikkor 180mm f2.8 ED, I have a chance to pick up a used one for £350. Thanks.
@nesspix I had that exact lens for my Pentax K10D and my son has the Nikon-fit version with VR for his D300. It was by far the best short zoom I ever used on my Pentax and the Nikon version is excellent too. Highly recommended.
I have this lens on a Nikon D7000. Before we bought D600, this was our all-around travel lens and I am very happy with it. The build quality isn't as good as with Nikon, but it's much cheaper and comparable in terms of sharpness.

If nothing else, it deserves an award for getting that many two-letter acronyms into a single lens name... (SP, AF, XR, DI, II, LD, IF)
