What lens to buy first.

I am new and bought a very nice used Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ30. If you were me and wanted to take soft looking photo of grandkids at a not real expenive price, what would you suggest I buy. Thanks all. Love this site and all the help everyone gives us newbies.

I believe that that is a fixed lens camera so you will not be able to change lenses.

@miata2u Does that camera support interchangeable lenses? I looked up the specs for the camera and it didn't appear to but I could be wrong. The lens that comes with it sounds pretty decent actually. I'm not *exactly* sure what you mean by "soft looking". Getting the "soft" look will have more to do with how the shot is taken (lighting/settings/etc) more so than the type of lens itself. Or, with the post-processing done to the exposure.

You can get a soft-focus filter that screws onto the front of the fixed lens of your FZ30, which will reduce contrast and cause a bit of 'glow', but it may cause the autofocus system to struggle, especially in poor light.

It would probably be easier and more flexible to apply that kind of effect in post-processing, where you can decide how strong or otherwise you want it to be.

you need a film SLR with a 50mm f1.8 lens, like a Pentax ME for instance. or in digital, and $000000000s more monies, a DSLR, which you put lenses on, and a 50mm f1,8. Bridge cameras are fun, portraits are probably their weakest point. imho

You can also play with old school "filters" :-) Shoot through saran wrap, scarves..etc. :-)

If anyone still owns a pair of stockings or fine denier pantyhose just stretch them over the lens.

Alexis' @abirkill advice is great to go with post processing (try PicMonkey here on 365).

And especially so is @m9f9l. A great choice to get "soft" is hosiery, and different colored hose can give you different color effects. Spread the hose tight across the lens, single layer, and fasten tight with a rubber band.

Thank you all for great advice. Seems like for someone new like me the panty hose is a good starter for the look I am wanting. Appreciate all the help.
