Recommendations for a negative scanner?

January 11th, 2014
For those of you/us who are old timers and took lots of shots on film before converting to digital: Do you have your own negative scanner? If so, does it work well? Do you recommend it? I'm thinking about acquiring one -- rather than sending my negatives somewhere to be scanned -- and I have no idea how to find a good one.

Or, is sending out the negatives to a service that does this the better choice?

Thanks in advance for suggestions/information/guidance.

I have a Plustek Opticfilm, and love it.

Don't bother with one of those cheapy ones. I had one and it was a disappointment. If you are on a budget you will get better results with a macro lens, tripod and light box.

Canoscan 9000F. I'm scanning negatives nearly every day and using the earlier (discontinued version) 8800F, fantastic scanner. @peterdegraaff probably has some great input as well.

I've got an old Epson 4870 PHOTO which does the job nicely.

I agree with @grizzlysghost unless you are planning on doing 4x5, then get an Epson V700. Canoscan makes lovely scans

@grizzlysghost @aprilmilani @peterdegraaff Canon 9000F ordered and on its way to my door. Be prepared for some historic images to appear on my project. (Oh, that visit to Scotland...)

Thanks again for the input!
