Interesting. I have to be a bit more selective because the dimensions of my rucksack exceeds the maximum for most airlines so I use a small Pelicase to hold my essential gear (and some gets packed in the hold luggage)
@heidibirch Yup! My poor wife sometimes carries an extra lens in her hand luggage. As for weight... well, if it all went in the hold, there would be little or no room for clothes!
kinda depends on where i am going and why... when i went on a hiking / biking trip with the family on a group tour thing i only brought the dslr and a walk-about lens (well, and a filter or two, and the charger and spare battery, extra card, gorilla pod, ;p) and even that was a bit much... will be taking a point and shoot next time for that kinda thing...
when i went up to yellowknife to shoot the northern lights i brought the dslr, at least two extra lenses (i think?) so i had my walkabout, my good 17-55 and my wide angle... plus filters, etc etc etc... that time my camera gear took up waaaay more space in my luggage than anything else ;p
We are keen birders too, so binoculars and spotting scope to add to the mix, and a bird book or two. But at least the tripod is adaptable for camera or scope.
