Special offer on UK lens hire

February 12th, 2014
If anyone has thought about hiring a lens I have just noticed that the following company has 50% off hire prices for rentals starting in the month of February.

http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/search

I have just hired a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM for a week for just under £50 excluding delivery.

A good opportunity to have a play with a lens you are thinking about buying or even just dreaming about maybe owning one day like me.

*edit* this is not just for rentals starting in Feb, but for rentals taken out in Feb, so I have just hired the same lens for an event I am shooting in June.

Just realised I left the link off my original post. Thanks @gillg for pointing this out. I only mentioned in one of my posts this week that I don't concentrate properly on the task in hand !

@jantan I think that you are going to love that lens. It is pretty darned awesome. My only advice would be to keep a very close eye on your DoF at f/2.8 - it is pretty shallow.

@steampowered Thanks for the advice Paul. I have been asked to take some informal shots at a wedding in June and want to hire if for that. So I thought I would take advantage of this offer to get a bit of practice in with it beforehand.

Yep i've used that company before and they're great. the lens comes packed in one of those rock solid hard plastic boxes packed with foam

@jantan its an amazing lens.. and really good for the ceremony. After the ceremony however, I think you'll be better off with a 24-70L f2.8 II

@toast Thanks for your advice Weng, I appreciate it. I was intending to use my 7D with the 70-200,, lens and borrow a friend's 7D body and have my 50mm f1.4 on that, but will certainly consider your advice. I must add that this is strictly a 'come and shoot some snaps' at a very laid back, pretty untraditional wedding. I wouldn't consider myself up to the job otherwise. The reception is going to be in the style of a village fete with bowling for a pig and 'welly wanging' from what I can gather.

ah ok.. well keep in mind that with the crop body of the 7D, the 70-200mm will be more like 112-320mm - thats a bit of a stretch. Good for getting between the pews at the churge and shooting straight down to the couple, bad for anything close up unless you want to capture their left (or right) nostril :)

When I shot my mate's wedding, I used that lens for pretty much just the ceremony. For the couple shots, we were very limited on time so i used the 24-70mm as i needed to talk to them all the time about what to do on the shoots :

back onto the original topic, great link Jan...
I think rental is great for :

- road testing a lens if you're contemplating buying it (this also includes road testing on holiday)
- special events like the olympics

Thanks Jan, problem is once you have tried it you will want one. I use mine all the time love it.

Jo
@jantan I have the 70-200 f4 L which is a fab lens and a lot lighter than the f2.8, you'll get a proper work out with that but also get great bokeh!

@padlock that is my biggest fear. I reckon that I will probably go into a big sulk when I have to give it back.

@jo13 I shall have to see how I get on. I figure I am probably reasonably strong given that I seem to spend half my life lugging bales of hay and straw around an shovelling s**t.

@jantan Lets make it easy for you. Resign yourself to the fact now that you will want to buy it!!! Job done, always willing to help on negotiations with shops, love to make them cry and invite me never to come back.
