Does anyone know of a program for Raw photos that's not Adobe?

March 19th, 2014
Unfortunately, my computer has "died". It is in getting looked at but I might not have it back until Friday if not the following Monday. So that means no daily photos unless there is a free program that I could download onto our spare laptop. I have only ever used Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Raw/Bridge for my photos.

Is there a free program I could download onto my laptop that will enable me to upload photos? Unfortunately,my laptop isn't "big" enough to handle any Adobe products.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks heaps :-)

Why not use the software that came with your Canon? The DPP program isn't too bad at all.

Have a look at photoscape...it's free (big bonus) and opens raw files (then converts them to JPEGS)

I've heard good things about the Canon software too

My husband just downloaded "Microsoft Camera Codec Pack" it opens raw files and I can save them as a jpg but does nothing else. Not even cropping. But at least I should be able to put up some photos :-) Thanks for the suggestions. :-)

@leanne333 It looks as if Canon have provided the software for download. You should find links here. http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/install_canon_software.html

Ufraw is an open source raw editor.

Gimp is an open source photo editor that is awesome. It does not have raw in its supported file types, but does every other format. I think ufraw might let you save as tiffs , jpeg etc.

If your laptop isn't big enough to handle adobe I wonder if it's big enough to handle raw files at all? They are huge files... Maybe shoot JPEG and raw and just post the jpegs until your computer is fixed?

I love LightRoom - but not sure if it's free or trial version or you have to buy it.

There is an older thread I started on this same topic. Many of the guy who do RAWCOMP offered some advice to someone else looking for a RAW editor. Check it out. http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/21494/free-easy-raw-editor-needed-any-advice

@homeschoolmom That's the thread I was looking for...

@inara I have heard that lightroom is quite good but it's not free. I really only want something to use until my computer gets fixed (hopefully it will). That's the only reason I am looking for something free. Thanks Kim :-)
