Nikon has finally offered to replace any D600 shutter assemby free of charge.

And to clean and inspect the whole camera. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Service-And-Support/Service-Advisories/hs309y82/Technical-Service-Advisory-for-Users-of-the-Nikon-D600-Digital-SLR-Camera.html.

If only they had offered to do this a year ago, they would have generated good will rather than the rancor that still sticks with even ardent Nikonites. And still no hint of remorse or apology. They just don't get it still I am afraid.

Yes, I've played with the idea of sending mine in. But after reading 100's of stories on the internet (yes, I know) it doesn't seem to actually fix it. Who knows. I'm going to wait, as there doesn't seem to be a time constraint. But for sure there are some serious issues with mine. Its actually quite frustrating, because I love my camera, it might be the best Nikon I've owned. But........

I've read people sending their camera in 2 or 3 times and no fix. I've also read some have had their camera replaced with a 610. WHo knows. But this is a global service advisory. So, it wasn't a "dust" problem.

@frankhymus I agree -- I wish they'd done this sooner, but having just gotten my D600 back, they made the process very easy. I emailed them, they sent me a label for shipping my camera body back to them. A week later (about), they shipped it back, and the spotting is gone. Now to see if that lasts for the long term! But if anyone else has received notice about their D600s, it really was a simple process and assuming they have replaced the problem parts, all should be well. I do like this camera body a lot.

@taffy - please keep us posted. Did they actually replace your shutter, or just clean your camera? I have read all sorts of different things. They gave you a packing slip, it should tell you there what (if anything) was done.

That was fast. I imagine all the D600 owners sending in their cameras would create quite a backlog of work.

And if they are replacing shutters, I might have to pick up a used one cheap. And have the shutter replaced. ;-P

@stillcrappysailor They said they replaced the shutter mechanism. In effect, they created a D610 out of the 600 (I think it's closest to the D610 which came out fairly soon after the 600). I do like the 600 a LOT. It's very user friendly, feels good to hold, has buttons (like bracketing) in the right place, has a few programmable function buttons, easy to navigate menu, etc. I still don't know how to use all its functions but am learning on an as-needed basis. You might want to check with Nikon and make sure you get it registered to you (I had bought mine used, but not cheaply as it was early in its launch) if you buy a used one. Good luck!

@taffy - I own it and love it. But mine is covered in oil. I only noticed it when shooting some outdoor stuff, and the sky was rendered oddly. I can live with it, as I'm not a pro in anyway. But its just frustrating.

@frankhymus Big Companies will never get "It" I am afraid.......... Profit is, and always will be their prime motivation.... :(
March 28th, 2014
@frankhymus @taffy - seems there is news as of today. So Taffy, you might want to send it in again, if (hopefully not) you get those spots again

Nikon has now apologized and is fixing or replacing the d600 free of charge including shipping even if it is out of warranty, what a terrible company. The funny thing is, people will still bitch about this and some of the people bitching the loudest don't even own a D600.
March 28th, 2014
@paulty But Nikon is actually a small company, the very sort you would expect to put out for the customer. :(

@frankhymus, Yes, you may well be right Frank, but I stumbled across this on a financial page......

The following data looks quite interesting, but sadly these figures don't show the currency, but £10.72130 billion sterling is quite some turnover! Even if it's Dollars or Japanese Yen, I reckon that's a fairly big company :)). And with 24,000 employees, it ranks as a serious contender :)

Financial Highlights, Nikon Corporation
Fiscal Year End: March
Revenue (2013): 10721.30 M
Revenue Growth (1 yr): (-4.00%)
Employees (2013): 24,047
Employee Growth (1 yr): (-1.2)

see.... people will still bitch

@paulty I believe these figures are in Yen. Divide by 80 and I think you have a company capitalized at less than US$1 billion. Perhaps small or niche is not the right word. "Specialty" is better, dedicated to the high end "optical" things, lensing and imaging, of the world. And unfortunately, they have been in a period of negative revenue growth for a number of years.
March 28th, 2014
@frankhymus Haha, yes.... You're right! :)
March 28th, 2014
@paulty Their DSRLs are still superb, but they haven't made too much of a splash in the high end mirrorless system market. Nor Canon for that matter. And with phones taking much of the Point and Shoot market, something new has to be done in the camera segment.
March 28th, 2014
@frankhymus .... Yes they do make good cameras, I use their D5300, which I've upgraded to from a D80. Maybe one day when I can afford it I'll get myself a D800..... But until then, my D5300 will do! :)
