Hiking - how to keep equipment safe from weather?

July 19th, 2014
I have read through the old discussions, and there is a lot of information about what people use for camera bags.

BUT, what I am specifically wondering about is how to protect gear when you are going to be in rain, snow, and far from any type of cover.

I have been hiking with zip lock bags in my camelback. My plan, if it gets really bad, is place the body, each lens, battery and cards in different ziplock bags, and hope that is enough to keep them from getting wet or damaged.

Any better ideas?

You can get dry-bags from most outdoor/adventure shops and they are easy to use, take up little room when rolled up and work a treat.

Regardless of the weather, I always have one rolled up and tucked away in my camera bag.

@bobfoto Awesome! Thanks. I'll have to take a look at that. Not sure exactly what they are (dry-bags).

Ziplock a will work.. But I would go the dry sac route like Jason suggested... Any good outdoorsy shop will carry them... Also, my camera gear backpack has a rain cover...

+1 On the Dry Bags. They're simple and easy to use but 100% effective if you get good quality ones. Take a look at these;

Dry sac works well: here's a link to one on sale that fits a camera. The 5L will work for most lenses. And the 10L works with a long lens on the camera.

When we went to Niagara Falls, I knew my camera would get wet, so I bought a couple rain covers for my camera. They worked great and were really cheap. I bought them on Amazon, here's a link.

I was able to get some amazing photos of the falls up close because I had these.

@northy @dgcarter @taffy @homeschoolmom Thank you all so much for commenting. This is something I worry about a lot when I am up in the mountains. Sometimes, I don't take my camera because I am afraid it might get damaged.
