Err01 when trying to shoot with my 75-300mm lens

Tells me to clean contacts. I did, no luck. I usually shoot in AV mode. When I switch to P it works no problem. When I switch to Tv it works most of the time, random error messages. Any thoughts ( other than always shoot P with this lens which I don't like)?

Try shooting in Av mode with the aperture wide open (smallest possible f-number). If that works it may be sticking aperture blades or a damaged ribbon cable inside the lens (both not that uncommon with that model), which would require it to be repaired.

@abirkill thanks Alexis. AV wide open works. Anything above that not. So shoot wide open, get it fixed, or get new lens.

That does mean it's quite likely to be an aperture control problem of some kind. Canon will give an estimate for repair if you send it in, but it probably will be a significant percentage of the overall lens value -- may be time for an upgrade? The 70-300 is a step up in image quality from the 75-300 and also adds image stabilisation.
