I hope somebody has an easy answer for me as this is driving me MAD! When powering up/down, I hear a sound (almost sounds like attempt to focus) always a sequence of 4 on power up/down. If I look through the lens when this is happening, I can actually see it 'jitter' ... not going in/out of focus.
This also happens at random times when using this lens. I've tried my other two lenses and no similar issue. I've factory reset the camera... did no good but lost my settings :( Tried changing all switch settings on lens ... nada :(
Ideas?
Thank you in advance for any wisdom you may have to offer!!!
It's the VR system resetting itself. VR lenses use a group of elements that can move around inside the lens, and counteract the movement of the lens itself.
When there's no power to the VR elements, in some lenses they can move around into a non-optimal position. Therefore the camera resets them when you switch it on or off. This happens even if VR is switched off (when it's switched off, the VR control system is still active, but just holds the VR elements centred in the optimal position).
There are various reports that when you can start to hear this system in action, it indicates a problem with the lens, but unless the lens is in warranty now, but going to be out of warranty very soon, I'd wait to see if you actually notice any problems with the lens.
@abirkill Thank you Alexis! I searched the nikon board and didn't find that thread. At least now I can stop trying to figure out what the hell is happening. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues with actual function or results of images but the lens is only a few months old so I should be able to have it repaired/replaced under warranty.

@abirkill@lisatown Saw the Jersey Nikon tech rep today at the local camera super store, and he confirmed Alexis' diagnosis. If it is intermittent, as mine is, D7100 with the f/4 70-200, he suggested there is not an issue, but if it always happens on power on (especially) he suggested that you should have it looked at by the Nikon factory folks, something is probably loose.

Here's a similar case with some scaremongering:
