Film developer

January 19th, 2015
I'm thinking about getting back into developing my own B&W again. It has been years since I've done so.

Any suggestions on the best developer to use? I used to use D76 in the old days, but mixing it is kind of a pain.

Anyone use a liquid developer that they like.

Also, what fixer and stop bath?

Thanks

(paging the first three that come to mind who regularly develop their own)

@catwhiskers hello . I use Ilfotec LC29 as it is all I can get hold of locally. Ilfostop and ilford rapid fixer. I am developing 120 film kodak TX400 and Shanghai GP3. So far no issues with the chemicals. However the photography is not so hot.
Hope this helps

@spanner Thanks so much for your input. Really appreciate it!

@catwhiskers no problem. I am a total novice and am limited by availability.

@spanner I live it a small town in the USA, not sure where you are from, but I order all my stuff from B&H Photo. They are great and usually do free shipping in the USA. They have a huge selection too.

@catwhiskers I live in New Zealand - things like developer are harder to import. Currently I am trying to buy a decent film scanner. They are more expensive and its harder to get a range here because of the small market.

@spanner My scanner does a pretty good job especially for the price. I think I only paid 300 for it. The long pano ones don't look that great because of the low quality from the toy camera I use, but I have scanned other negs and it does a pretty good job.

@catwhiskers the only Epson I can get is the new v800. It is $900 which is a bit much for an armature like me. I have had to go for a canon 9000f which was my third choice but makes sense cost wise. The Canon is half the price. Which toy camera are you using for the panoramas? I think the scans look good.

@catwhiskers for a liquid developer why not try RO9 or Adonal which both use the old Rodinal formula. Gives a classic look, can be used for stand development, economical to use, and can be used in a variety of dilutions.

I often use Rodinal, and with sheet film often use with Xtol. I like Xtol as it is not particularly toxic, but you need to make it up in batches of 5litres at a time.

@peterdegraaff - YO!

I used Rodinal RO9 too, which I got off eBay for pretty cheap, and I used Ilfostop and Tetenal chemicals for stop and fix. Rodinal is good and versatile.
what camera you use?

@peterdegraaff @chewyteeth Thanks for all the info. I'll give them a try.I have a Maymia 645 and a few toy cameras.

If you can get any Agfa APX100 to shoot, that was my fav, and doing it in Rodinal its like developing photos from the 1900s. Hard to get though, I think they discontinued it a while ago.

@chewyteeth Thanks, I'lll check it out!
