Currently using a Canon 6d and various Canon lenses. I shoot mainly macro which the 6d and 100m macro combo does well. The 6d is unspectacular in AF terms but I shoot macro in manual and for general photography it isn't so important anyway.
I am seriously looking at switching to M43, perhaps OM-D and wondered if anyone has any macro experience with mirrorless? Main concerns are IQ and macro flash capabilties in mirrorless. Would love to trek with lighter gear!
Keith, I have just seen your post - I have an Olympus OMD EM5 and bought it especially because I couldn't handle heavy cameras any more. Also my specialty before joining 365 was macro orchids in the wild and fungi. On the day of purchase it was mandatory for me to get the 60mm 1.8 macro lens. that translates to 120mm in old terms. I am in love with the camera and the lens. I am a bit pressed for time just now but will get back to you on lights, etc.
@kporte hi Keith. As you have Canon equipment and gear. Why don't you check new Canon EOS M3 ( it comes with an APS-C sensor). You will have a mirrorless than can take advantage of your Canon lenses.
I used Nikon DSLR, then I switched to Nikon 1 system, finally to a Fujifilm x-E1 because I can carry a APS-C sensor on my pocket. But I don't want to invest in new lens because macro shots and others can be done through the Nikon... If Nikon has made the 1 system in APS-C, I didn't feel the need of change to other manufacturer. By the other side I'm happy with my fuji. It is perfect for my street shots most people didn't notice me and what I am doing...
I shoot with a Panasonic gx 7. My fav lens is my Leica macro 45mm. Nothing to compare it with as first camera since a compact. But I adore it for its size and light weight. The macro lens is a joy
I'm not a huge tecchie expert but have just added to my Fuji X20, which I love, a Sony a6000 which I also love. It's lightweight and so far I'm happy with all the lenses I've bought: macro 30mm 3.5 ; 16-50mm 3.5 to 5.6; portrait 50 mm1.8.
@kporte Hi Keith ) I do very little macro work but that's partly down to the high standard set by certain people on here that I couldn't hope to duplicate. I do shoot FF and APS-C Nikons and I also have the Sony Nex6 and Nex7 so have some experience of mirrorless. - I personally like the EVFs but they do take a while to get used to their little foibles. I would have thought that a micro 4/3 camera (I think the Olympus would be my choice) would be ideal for you because of the much greater DoF inherent in the smaller size sensor: the downside of the smaller sensor is that you would not be able to crop as much as you can with a FF image. Why not hire one for a week and see how you like it?
Keith, I know you are looking into Olympus M43 and will probably be combing the net and You tube. The web page here is interesting academically - just below the two photos, there is a short sentence re genesis of the Olympus system - Microscopy - right up your alley.
I have macro arm lights which fit on to the hot shoe of my OM-D EM-5. they have individual switches and two choices of light intensity. I haven't used them enough to have a strong opinion. I have found it astounding that I can use a very high ISO before digital noise kicks in and so don't need flash anyway a lot of the time.
The lights shown on this web page are used by a friend who has been co-author of books on Victorian wild Orchids. I think they are only for SLR's -- not sure.
I came across a video showing use of 12-50mm lens macro option. Lovely and thought of you. I find this lens together with the 60mm Macro fits most situations beautifully.
good luck with your searching.
